What is the difference between Arabica and Robsta? Why are rose summer coffee beans so expensive? How many trees does it take to plant coffee freedom?
I believe many friends have fantasized that they will live a quiet life of self-sufficiency and self-sufficiency in an environment leaning on mountains and water. Since we are coffee lovers, we naturally have to grow and supply our own coffee. And this can also be a way to achieve coffee freedom-grow your own coffee.
Because Qianjie has already started growing coffee in 13 years, we often receive a question from guests and friends: how many coffee trees must be planted in order to realize coffee freedom?
Fine! So today, let's not talk about extraction or brewing. Let's take a look at how many coffee trees we need to plant in order to realize the freedom of coffee.
How many coffee trees must be planted before coffee freedom can be realized? In order to ensure that the answer can be a little more rigorous, this article will use a large number of statistics! So first of all, we have to calculate how many coffee beans are needed to satisfy the freedom of coffee for a year! When we love coffee so much that we want to grow coffee trees to be self-sufficient, one cup can no longer meet our daily coffee needs. All right! Let's calculate it according to the quantity of two cups a day. Take espresso alone. A cup of coffee uses 20g of beans, and two cups a day is 40g. Then multiply it by 365 days of the year, and you need 14600g of coffee beans a year. But it will inevitably lead to loss, so we calculate according to the minimum loss, draw a zero to take the whole, together with the loss add up to consume a total of 15000g (15kg) of ripe coffee beans per year.
15kg is our annual demand for coffee beans, so next we need to use this number to calculate. First of all, this 15kg refers to cooked beans. After roasting into ripe beans, raw coffee beans have a weight loss rate of 1520%, depending on the degree of roasting of coffee beans. Generally speaking, we use deep-roasted coffee beans to make espresso, with a weight loss rate of about 20%. Then calculate according to 4kg, and then add up the original weight: 15kg+4kg=19kg, that is, the weight of our raw beans needs to be in 19kg.
Coffee beans come from coffee cherries, that is, coffee fruits. Only after the coffee fruit is actually picked and processed can the raw coffee beans that can be roasted be obtained. In the process of treatment, the coffee fruit will remove the peel, pulp and other substances other than beans, and then the beans will be dried until the moisture content is about 11%. Therefore, on average, only 1 kilogram of raw coffee beans are produced for every 4 kilograms of coffee fruit. In other words, the coffee trees we plant need to produce a total of 76 kilograms of fruit every year to allow us to achieve coffee freedom in a year!
At present, the main varieties with commercial value are Arabica and Robusta. If you don't want to spend too much time on planting, you can choose to plant Robusta! Although the flavor of Robusta is not good, its disease resistance is strong, it is easy to feed, and the fruit hanging rate is high. The average harvest of each Robusta plant can be 3-5 kg. If we calculate on the basis of 4 kilograms, then we need to plant 19. (calculated on the basis of one harvest a year) if you pursue flavor, then you need to choose Arabica species. Arabica's average fruit hanging rate is about 1.5kg~2.5kg.
In Arabica species, Rosa Rosa is obviously the first choice according to its flavor. But it will yield less than other varieties, so we calculate according to the average yield of a tree as 1.5kg, so in order to achieve rose summer freedom in a year, at least about 51 rose summer coffee trees need to be planted! However, the reason why rose summer is so expensive is not only because of its outstanding flavor and low output, but also because it is delicate and difficult to feed! So, in order for us to have a variety of 2-3 tablets to ensure that the coffee can be kept uninterrupted in a year.
To sum up, if we want to realize the freedom of coffee and rosy summer by planting coffee trees, we have to plant at least 50 coffee trees. But planting doesn't just sow coffee seeds and wait for the harvest next year! As mentioned above, Arabica is very delicate, especially in summer, so we not only have to find a good planting environment, but also to take continuous care of it. Then, the coffee tree must be cultivated for at least 3 years before it can bear fruit. During this three-year period, if the coffee plant occurs, we have to pull it down and start all over again! And even if we succeed in bearing fruit, we still have to deal with, roast and wait for a series of treatments after the coffee fruit is harvested! Yes. If you can accept repeating these trivial things over and over again, then growing your own coffee to achieve coffee freedom is really something you can try.
