On Monday, the Overlord Tea Lady used a background image containing a nine-dash map in her application software as required by existing laws in China, but aroused strong opposition from Vietnam netizens and caused a wave of boycotts on local social media.

Affected by this, the periphery of the first store of Bawang Chah Ji, originally located in Ho Chi Minh City, no longer displays brand-related logos. Instead, it is replaced by a dark green construction fence. According to security guards at nearby stores, Bawang Chah Ji's sign was removed shortly after the boycott began.

On March 20, Ho Chi Minh City authorities confirmed at a press conference that they had investigated the company on the above issues. In addition, Vietnam's state-run media "Labor Daily" reported that the authorities will also investigate an image of the Badge Chah Chai brand badge spread online, saying that the badge image is suspected to bear the pattern of the tomb of former Vietnam President Ho Chi Minh, but the accompanying text contains false content.

However, although Overlord Tea Girl removed the controversial application after the incident, it can still be downloaded and used normally in other Southeast Asian countries. Therefore, some Malaysian netizens also found that the background images of the apps they used contained the same situation, which in turn aroused resistance from local netizens.

Due to strong criticism from netizens, the brand has deleted the background image from its app, but has barely been able to quell the voices of netizens. However, local reporters observed in Kuala Lumpur at the Bawang Chaji store in Kuala Lumpur that there were not many customers who came to buy drinks directly, but takeout orders were still in an endless stream, and the store's business remained stable.

Earlier, American chain brands such as Starbucks and McDonald's were boycotted by the Malaysian people due to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The boycott wave still affects the development of brands in the local consumer market. Among them, no less than 50 Starbucks stores in Malaysia were closed due to spontaneous public boycott.

In contrast, although Malaysian netizens have continued to boycott the Overlord Tea Girl on social media, at present, online public opinion has not had much impact on the operation of their offline stores.

In response to the requirements of China law, the Overlord Tea Lady used the domestic official version of the map in the background when making a public announcement in Vietnam. This resulted in the demolition of the store with the App and half of the decoration. Now she is being boycotted by innocent Malaysian users. This unreasonable reason caused serious losses to the merchants.
