Recently, CBS News and other media reported that Peet's Coffee, a coffee chain founded in Berkeley in 1966, will close many stores in the San Francisco Bay Area and surrounding areas later in January this year.
The sudden news has been confirmed by a spokesperson for Peet's,"Peet's has made the difficult decision to close some Peet's Coffee stores before the end of January 2026." "These store closures reflect our broader efforts to align our business with long-term growth priorities and current market conditions, and we sincerely thank our outstanding employees and loyal customers for their continued support of the brand," the spokesperson said.
However, after the company confirmed the news of the store closure reported by the media, employees still working at Peet's San Francisco Bay Area store only felt panicked, because the official response given by the brand did not mention how many stores the store closure would affect, nor did it disclose which stores were closed.
According to multiple local media reports in San Francisco, Peet's employees were suddenly told last Monday that their stores would be permanently closed, and some stores have been confirmed to be permanently closed in less than two weeks, including an old store on Polk Street that opened in 1993 and has been in operation for 33 years.
In addition, the Daily Northwest reported that a store manager revealed to it that Peet's Coffee would close at least three stores in the Chicago area, but it only told the Evanston store that it would close on January 30, and did not disclose the specific locations of the other two stores that were about to close.
According to the brand's official website, Peet's has more than 280 stores in the United States and approximately 135 stores in the San Francisco Bay Area, making it by far its largest domestic market. In addition to the four stores that were confirmed to be permanently closed in the media, the San Francisco Chronicle learned through a store manager that Peet's store closures could affect as many as 30 stores in California. And this number is expected to change as more store closures are confirmed.
Whether employees or regular customers, most of them were caught off guard after learning the news of the store's closure confirmed by Peet's. Many netizens expressed on social media their regret and regret when they saw that familiar stores had to close due to the company's business adjustments. It also made many people feel deeply sad that the stores that they have been with for many years suddenly came to an end.
It is noteworthy that Peet's store closures without warning came shortly after the news that its parent company, JDE Peet's, was acquired. Reuters reported that on January 15, U.S. soft drinks giant Keurig Dr Pepper launched an all-cash tender worth US$18 billion, with its acquisition target being JDE Peet's.
The offer was officially launched last week, and after the deal is reached, Keurig plans to split JDE Peet's coffee and other beverage businesses into two listed companies,"creating a global coffee company that can rival market leader Nestlé."
