Drinking two cups of coffee a day helps protect the heart and reduce the risk of heart failure, according to a new study published in the journal Circulation Heart Failure.

Heart failure patients have lower survival rates than many cancer patients, with up to 40% of heart failure patients dying within one year of diagnosis. Drinking coffee regularly in moderation reduces the risk of heart disease, but drinking too much coffee (more than five cups a day) can backfire and increase the risk of heart failure, new research suggests.

Researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston combed through the results of five earlier studies involving 150,000 men and women. Participants who drank one to two cups of coffee a day had an 11 percent lower risk of heart failure than those who didn't drink coffee. The health effects of coffee drinking in heart disease patients are comparable to those of healthy people. However, participants who drank more than five cups of coffee a day had a higher incidence of heart disease.

Dr. Murray Mittelman, who led the new study, said that like many foods, moderation is critical, and so is coffee. The new study has not yet pinpointed the specific mechanism by which coffee reduces heart failure. But researchers believe coffee may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and diabetes, two of the biggest risk factors for heart failure. Lowering the incidence of hypertension or diabetes can greatly reduce the risk of heart failure. The findings are good news for coffee lovers.

Another study suggests that regular coffee consumption helps reduce the risk of death from all causes, which in turn helps to prolong life. These include heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, injury, accident, diabetes and infection, but not cancer.
