Who invented the French press in the history of the coffee pot?

"From the beginning, the French were more enthusiastic about how to cook coffee than any other country," William Harrison Ukers wrote in his book All About Coffee, published in 1922. The first French-made coffee machine appeared around 1800, Ukers said, and 40 years later, the first coffee machine made of glass appeared.

Although Ukers lists dozens of coffee machines like a coffee encyclopedia, there is not a single word in the encyclopedia about simple coffee presses.

The French press is called a cafétière in England, and it is not mentioned in Ukers 'book because this device was not used much in Ukers' life, but the history of the French press can be traced back to long before Ukers 'book was published. In March 1852, a Malikin craftsman and a merchant jointly obtained a patent entitled "Piston Filter Coffee Device." The patent describes a metal can attached to a movable rod with holes in the bottom and flannel layers on top and bottom. After manually pulling the movable rod, the movable rod moves in the cylindrical container. "Press the lever all the way down," the inventor wrote,"and the filtered coffee stays on top of the lever, refreshing."

But it wasn't until the late 1920s, when a Milanese company patented a modified version of the French press, that the French press became known. Within a few years of filing the patent, the company perfected the design: in 1935, they introduced the perfect French press, with springs attached to the plate-like structure at the bottom of the piston to keep the plate flush with the bottom of the container.

This action is called French Press.

In the 1950s, a similar coffee appliance appeared in Europe, but the popularity of the French press pot in the United States took some effort, until today, the French press pot was respected by coffee lovers all over the world, and it took a long time. (To this day, the Oxford English Dictionary's first definition of French press is "a movement that exercises and strengthens biceps.") In the early 1980s, some Americans learned to use French presses and called them cafetière, while others called them "French piston-type coffee machines." Florence Fabricant introduced readers to this "French press" in The New York Times in 1993, describing it as a favorite of coffee connoisseurs. But the French press had one major flaw, Florence says: "The coffee that came out of it was sometimes like mud."
