Yunnan is one of the main coffee producing areas in Asia, and it is also an important node for the world coffee giants to lay out the Chinese and even Asian markets. Yunnan Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government have always attached importance to and supported the development of coffee industry. Through years of support, coffee industry has developed rapidly. In 2014, the province's coffee planting area was 1.83 million mu, three times higher than the 640,000 mu in 2010, and the output was 118,000 tons, more than twice higher than the 49,000 tons in 2010. The planting area and output accounted for more than 99% of the country's total.
At present, coffee planting areas in the whole province are distributed in more than 40 counties (urban areas) in 10 prefectures and cities. The main producing areas are Baoshan, Dehong, Pu 'er and Lincang in southern Yunnan and southwest Yunnan. The planting area and output of the four prefectures and cities account for more than 85% of the whole province. Coffee is also an important foreign-earning agricultural product. In 2014, coffee exports were 48429 tons, and foreign exchange earned by export was USD 145.91 million, a slight increase over the previous year, ranking the third place after vegetables and tobacco; coffee industry in Yunnan Province has become a characteristic advantageous industry that promotes agricultural and rural economic development, farmers 'income increase and border prosperity and stability.
China is one of the countries with the fastest growth in coffee consumption in the world, with a recent consumption of 90,000 tons of coffee, which is still relatively low compared with major Asian consumers such as Japan and South Korea. However, China's coffee consumption is growing at a rate of more than 20% per year, far higher than the world's 3% growth level, and the market space is huge. According to the analysis of global coffee production and marketing situation, by 2020, the coffee planting area of Yunnan Province is expected to reach more than 2.5 million mu, with an annual output of 200,000 tons of green coffee beans, a total output value of more than 35 billion yuan and an export foreign exchange of more than 300 million US dollars.
