Australia researchers have found an increase in cases of ill health associated with caffeinated energy drinks.

The study, carried out jointly by the University of Sydney School of Medicine and the New South Wales Poison Information Centre, was published in the Australia Medical Journal on the 16th.

The "toxicity" of caffeinated energy drinks in Australia is causing increasing health problems, the study wrote.

In 2010, 65 people experienced "adverse reactions" after drinking caffeinated energy drinks. In 2004, the number was 12.

Between 2004 and 2010, researchers said, 297 people were recorded calling for help because they experienced physical "discomfort" from drinking caffeinated drinks, including palpitations, mood disturbances and stomach upset, and 20 people experienced severe symptoms such as seizures or hallucinations. Of all those seeking help, 128 required medical treatment.

The researchers recommend that caffeinated energy drinks be sold and marketed with health warnings and poison information center hotlines.

"How much caffeine these drinks contain, how much you can buy at a time, and how old you should be at the time of purchase," said the Poison Information Center medical director. (by Xinhua Agency)
