New study: children with caffeine in soda are addicted
Australia: The prevalence of caffeine in soft drinks may increase children's chances of becoming addicted to it and increase the number of obese children, according to a new study released on January 7.
Caffeine is added to beverages primarily to sweeten sodas with its bitter taste, and more than half of all sodas contain caffeine, especially colas, manufacturers claim.
However, Professor Russell Kester and his team at Deakin University in Victoria, Australia, have conducted thousands of experiments to show that caffeinated drinks taste no different from uncaffeinated drinks. The researchers note that manufacturers may be trying to "change consumer behavior." Professor kester called for the authorities to ban manufacturers from adding caffeine to children's drinks. He believes that a 500 ml can of soda contains enough caffeine to make children addicted. In addition, absorbing too much sugar increases the risk of obesity.
