According to the China Medical Tribune recently, studies such as Bech of Aarhus University in Denmark have found that women drinking the right amount of coffee in the third trimester of pregnancy will not affect the time of pregnancy and the birth weight of the baby. (BMJ published online on January 26th, 2007)

The double-blind, randomized, controlled study included 1207 pregnant women. All participants drank at least three cups of coffee a day, either caffeinated or decaffeinated. The researchers compared the time of pregnancy and the birth weight of their babies in the caffeine group (568) and the decaffeinated group (629).

The results showed that the average caffeine intake of women in the decaf group was 182 mg lower than that in the other group. Of the 1150 singletons born, the average birth weight was 7.75lb in the decaffeinated group and 7.8lb in the caffeine group. Among the 1153 parturients, the time of pregnancy in the decaffeinated group was 1.31 days less than that in the caffeine group, and the difference was not statistically significant.

The researchers believe that moderate caffeine intake does not affect the time of pregnancy or the birth weight of the baby. However, the study did not explore the safety of caffeine intake in early pregnancy and the effects of high caffeine intake on pregnancy. Experts warn that pregnant women should limit their caffeine intake as much as possible. A caffeine-free diet is particularly important for women who often have miscarriages or difficulties in pregnancy.
