Is there too much caffeine in coffee?
Whether it's to combat pesky sleeping bugs, or just to get that rich aroma, more than 80 percent of Americans rely on caffeine every day.
The two most common forms of caffeine in our lives are coffee and tea. But many people aren't sure which of the two substances contains more caffeine. Studies have shown that tea contains more caffeine than coffee by weight. However, a catty of tea leaves often brew hundreds of cups of tea, while the same amount of coffee beans end up brewing less than 100 cups of coffee. So in a cup versus cup contest, coffee wins.
A 227 ml cup of tea contains between 20 and 90 mg of caffeine, while a cup of coffee of the same volume contains 60 to 180 mg of caffeine. The longer the tea is brewed, the more caffeine it contains: up to 35 mg per 142 ml of tea for one minute; 50 mg per 142 ml for five minutes.
As for coffee, ground coffee beans produce the most caffeine by dripping, filtered coffee is second, and instant coffee is the least. Black tea and green tea contain roughly the same amount of caffeine. But in addition to caffeine, tea also contains theophylline, another powerful stimulant, which, if reached in a certain amount, is enough to excite the central nervous system. But whatever form you choose, it's better to sleep.
