Uganda plans to quadruple coffee production
(Market Watch-Nicholas Bariyo) Uganda, Africa's largest coffee exporter, is planning to quadruple its coffee production in the next few years to profit from rising global coffee consumption and increase export earnings, Uganda's president said on Saturday.
A presidential spokeswoman quoted Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni as saying that the East African country plans to increase production from the current 3 million bags to at least 12 million bags of 60 kg each in the medium term. The government will also use the opportunity to add value to its coffee to maximize returns.
Museveni made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation of the International Coffee Organization (International Coffee Organization) in Kampala, Uganda. The delegation was led by Olivera (Roberio Oliveira), Executive Director of the International Coffee Organization.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said that part of the national strategy to increase coffee production is to replace new trees with old ones. Most coffee trees in Uganda are more than 40 years old, which leads to a reduction in coffee production.
Uganda plans to plant at least 20 million new high-yielding coffee trees each year and hopes to meet its production target by 2020.
Coffee is Uganda's second largest source of foreign exchange earnings after tourism. Almost all of the coffee produced in the country is exported in the form of coffee beans, mainly to EU countries, the United States and Asia.
Uganda's coffee production in 2012-2013 is expected to grow by at least 10 per cent year-on-year to about 3 million bags.
