According to Myanmar Business Today on December 1, Minlai, secretary of the Myanmar Coffee Association, said that more than 100 tons of high-quality coffee beans from Mandalay and Shan State will be exported to Japan and other Asian countries. The base price of these coffee beans is $3.50 per kilogram, and only high-quality fresh coffee beans will be exported. At present, the price of coffee beans on the Burmese market is 3000 to 3300 kyat (about US $2.50 per kilogram), and more profits can be made by exporting abroad. Therefore, in order to obtain more foreign exchange and increase the income of farmers, the Coffee Association is committed to exporting coffee to more countries. Minlai said Burmese coffee beans are currently mainly exported to Japan and South Korea. Japan and South Korea import Burmese coffee beans because of their good taste, high quality and freshness. Myanmar has about 30, 000 acres (about 12000 hectares) of coffee trees, mainly in Mandalay and Shan State. Myanmar exported 36 tons of coffee beans to Japan in 2014.
