Blue Bottle opened its first coffee shop in Japan as its production base in Japan. Schemata Architects was commissioned to renovate its former warehouse in Kiyosumi Shirakawa, Tokyo, to accommodate baking, coffee, offices, barista training rooms and pastry factories.

The designer opens the building to the outside, creating a continuous space. In order to maintain the relationship across space boundaries, large glass doors and screens are installed on each floor to maintain the transparency of the surrounding space, inside and outside, upper and lower floors. Since the original warehouse had no windows, the designer built a large skylight in the center so that natural light was distributed all over the second floor. The skylight is located just above the gap connecting the first floor and the second floor, in which the indoor greening in the upper layer reflects rich natural light and brings exotic forest light to the lower layer.

Blue Bottle provides customers with no ordinary coffee experience, they can actually see and feel the lively production process in the baking area, while enjoying delicious coffee in the coffee area.
