Panama Elida Estate: Washed Coffee at 3,300m
When you taste a Panama coffee described as having "milk chocolate, citrus, peach, and grapefruit" notes, you’re likely drinking something grown in extreme conditions—high altitude, volcanic soil, and a cool microclimate. But which farm, exactly, produces those profiles consistently? And what makes its washed coffees so different from the usual lot?
The answer is Elida Estate in Panama’s Boquete region, growing at 3,300 metres above sea level. This estate produces washed Catuai coffee that has scored highly in the Best of Panama competition for five straight years.
Where Is Elida Estate?
Elida Estate sits in the western Panamanian province of Chiriquí, inside the famed Boquete coffee-growing region. The area is dominated by the Baru Volcano, Central America’s highest peak at 3,300m. The volcano splits into seven distinct microclimates due to elevation shifts, and Boquete lies on its eastern slopes. This valley was shaped by ancient lava flows and lies directly opposite the well-known Volcán Valley. Elida itself is positioned on the volcano’s slopes, taking full advantage of its unique terroir.
What Makes Elida’s Altitude and Environment Special?
At 1,670–1,850m, Elida Estate grows some of the highest-elevation coffee in Panama—only rivaled by a few farms in the nearby Volcán Valley, such as Finca Carmen. The high elevation drastically slows cherry ripening by about a month. Combined with rich, volcanic soils and a cool, stable microclimate created by the Baru Volcano, this environment extends the maturation period and concentrates flavor compounds in the coffee cherry. These factors strongly contribute to the distinctive cup profile for which Elida is known.
The estate spans 65 hectares, over half of which lie within the Baru Volcano National Park. Of the cultivable land, 30 hectares are planted with coffee, while the remaining 35 hectares remain untouched native forest. This forest cover provides essential shade, supports biodiversity, and maintains a balanced ecosystem around the coffee trees.
How Does Elida Farm and Process Its Coffee?
Lamastus Family Estates, which owns and manages Elida, practices sustainable agriculture. The team plants native trees for shade and wildlife habitat, applies only minimal chemical fertilizers, and avoids harmful pesticides or herbicides entirely. While the farm grows multiple varieties—including Catuai, Typica, Bourbon, and Geisha—the lots entered into the Best of Panama competition exclusively use the Catuai variety. Even without Geisha, these Catuai lots have earned top accolades thanks to Elida’s growing conditions and exceptional post-harvest processing.
The Elida Natural we highlighted earlier is just one of the estate’s offerings. The standard offering from Elida Estate that competes in competitions and is widely recognized is processed using the washed method. This careful processing helps highlight the bright acidity, clean profile, and complex fruitiness inherent in the high-altitude Catuai beans.
