Starbucks' first store in India opens next week at The Palace Hotel of the Taj Mahal
Starbucks (SBUX) officially entered a market long dominated by tea drinks by opening his first Indian branch in a historic building in Mumbai on Oct. 19, local time.
After more than six years of research into the local market, Starbucks is rapidly entering the Indian market, Asia's third-largest economy. "this is probably the most elegant, beautiful and dynamic store in our history," Howard Schultz (left), CEO of the company, said in an interview.
In January 2012, Starbucks formed a joint venture with Tata Global Beverage, a subsidiary of the Tata Group. The company plans to open two more stores in Mumbai next week, one in The Palace Hotel of the Taj Mahal and the other in the Oberoi hotel, and will open in New Delhi early next year.
Coffee houses are a relatively new trend in India, where coffee chains sell cappuccinos and lattes at much lower prices than Starbucks.
