Talking about "Arabica" again
To put it simply, Arabica is like talking about the people on earth. Arabica is like what we call "Asians or yellow people". It is also divided into Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Israelis and Arabs. Not to mention that each country has different provinces, counties, and places of origin; perhaps it is not appropriate to describe people with race or nationality, because people are not high or low, but the same "Arabica" is indeed very different in quality and price. Taking the price as the clearest, Arabica with different producing areas and grades will sell for more than 20 times, so how much do we know about Arabica?
"Arabica" is a native species, and under "species" it is divided into three stages: "secondary", "variety" and "variety". According to the statistics of SCAA (American Fine Coffee Association), Arabica coffee alone has derived more than 70 varieties, so which or which suitable varieties should be selected for breeding and promotion in Taiwan? This answer is left to professionals who are concerned about Taiwan's local industry to study and discuss. Based on the literature in hand, the author provides several major derived tree species of "Arabica species" for growers' consideration.
Typica is the most close to the native tree species of Arabica, with lively aroma and rich acidity, and the main planting base is Central and South America; the disadvantage is that it is not resistant to frost damage and dense rainfall, and is easy to breed leaf rust, so it is necessary to plant more dense shade trees.
Catimor high-yield commercial tree species, fast growth, high yield, do not need too dense shade trees and low height easy to harvest, in terms of quality can only be said to be general, it is the mating species of Timor and Catuai under the Arabica system.
Catuai has high yield and good environmental adaptability, and the main planting sites are distributed in some countries in Central and South America. The disadvantage is that the harvest life is shorter than that of ordinary tree species, about ten years, and the taste and balance are relatively monotonous in quality.
The average yield of Bourbon is higher than that of ordinary tree species, but not as good as Catuai. It has the characteristics of Typica, aroma and taste. It is a mutant of Typica. It is native to East Africa and is now widely cultivated in South America.
Caturra high-yield tree species and resistant to leaf rust, both belong to high-quality coffee, sour taste is rich, only higher altitude can grow high-quality crops, at the same time need to spend more manual management and corresponding fertilization costs.
Maragogype coffee beans are extremely large, sell well, the trees are higher than the general tree species, the harvest is relatively difficult and the yield is low, the taste is relatively vague, but the market price is high, and the planting bases are mostly distributed in Central American countries and Colombia.
