New York Futures: ICE Raw Sugar and Coffee Futures rose as support from a weaker dollar
New YORK / London (Reuters)-ICE raw sugar and Arabica coffee futures rose on Thursday as the dollar weakened, but prices rebounded from a recent three-year low on expectations of an ample supply of sugar cane and coffee beans in Brazil.
ICE cocoa futures rose for the fourth day in a row, driven by technical buying.
ICE- July raw sugar futures closed 0.10 cents, or 0.6% higher, settling at 16.48 cents a pound, with volume rebounding slightly from a three-year low of 16.32 cents hit on Tuesday on expectations of ample supply in Brazil.
The dollar fell against a basket of currencies. A weaker dollar makes dollar-denominated raw forest cheaper for investors who hold other currencies.
Boosted by the extension transaction, the volume of raw sugar transactions. Preliminary data from Thomson Reuters showed that trading volume was about 186000, with a 30-day average of slightly less than 89000.
Open positions in ICE sugar futures climbed to their highest level in more than five years on Wednesday.
London International Financial Futures and options Exchange (LIFFE)-August sugar futures closed up $4.70, or 1%, at $482.50 a tonne.
ICE- July Arabica coffee futures rose 2 cents, or 1.6%, to close at $1.2945 a pound, the biggest one-day rise in recent months since early May.
