According to data provided by the Nicaraguan Export Trading Center (Cetrex), in the year to the end of May, Nicaraguan coffee exports increased by 12.5% in volume and 14.87% in value compared with the same period last year.
Cetrex said that in the 2016-2017 harvest year, which began on October 1 last year, Nicaraguan coffee exports totaled US $295.88 million, an increase of US $38.32 million from US $257.56 million in the same period of last year.
During the above-mentioned period, international coffee prices rose by an average of 4.5 per cent, to $163.1 per kilogram, up from $156.07 the previous year, according to Cetrex.
Nicaraguan coffee exporters and officials estimate that the total export volume of Nicaraguan coffee will reach 2.5 million metric tons this harvest year (ending September 31), with a total value expected to reach 397.77 million US dollars.
During the above-mentioned period, the United States remained the main buyer of Nicaraguan coffee, importing a total of 1.06 million metric tons of Nicaraguan coffee.
