The Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) has pledged to increase national coffee production, as Indonesia ranks fourth in the world in coffee production, with an average annual output of 0.6 tons per hectare.
According to this production, Indonesia produced only 690000 1000 tons of coffee last year, far less than Colombia's 840000 tons, Vietnam's 1.6 million tons and Brazil's 3 million tons.
To this end, the Ministry of Agriculture is trying to vigorously promote coffee production of one ton per hectare. With a total area of 1.23 million hectares (ha), the annual output of coffee can reach 1.2 million tons. But the Ministry of Agriculture admitted that the measure would not be easy because 50% of Indonesia's coffee crops are aging and need to be replanted immediately.
The Ministry of Agriculture has increased the area of coffee cultivation in Kalimantan by 200 hectares, but there can be no direct harvest, as coffee trees take two to three years to produce.
A few days ago, Paranodo, deputy president of the Indonesian Coffee exporters Association (AEKI). "the government's plan to add 200 hectares of coffee plantations in Kalimantan will not increase coffee production, as it will take about three years for coffee crops to be produced," Pranoto Soenarto told reporters.
Paranado claims that various measures are needed to produce 1.2 million tons of coffee a year, such as replanting coffee trees, mentoring coffee farmers and providing subsidized fertilizers. Although many social self-financing organizations (LSM) and non-governmental organizations (NGO) have provided mentoring activities, the results are still not satisfactory because they offer different ways to protect coffee crops.
Hudama, president of the Indonesian Coffee exporters Union (Gaeki). Sughandi (Hutama Sugandhi) said that to increase production, there must be correct and clear counselors, including the provision of high-quality saplings.
Measures to provide quality coffee seedlings to coffee farmers are urgent, as 50 per cent of coffee crops in coffee plantations across the country must be replanted because coffee trees are aging and not properly cared for. "more than 600000 hectares of coffee plantations have to be replanted.
