About Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Chelba Natural OCR
Cherba is back! This beautiful coffee comes from the Chelba factory in the Gedeo district of Yirgacheffe country. We were lucky to visit for a while, and the Trabocca team spent a lot of time planning the upcoming harvest and implementing some processing improvements.
This naturally processed batch is the result of very selective cherry sorting during picking and sorting before drying. Only the steepest cherries are selected, the cherry layer is kept as thin as possible, and the table tends to rotate regularly to ensure uniform drying. Cherba, a privately owned factory in Gedeo, has produced a number of unapproved batches this year, meeting strict standards. We are lucky to drink them all, and we are happy to say that we bought the best!
The cherries are held by small farmers, whose farms are handed over to Cherba, with an average of 2 acres per acre. The total area of these producers is about 888ha, with an average elevation of 1900 m. The farmer group has about 490 farmers, with an annual output of about 577 metric tons.
Cherry Red (OCR) Coffee is a quality development project run by Trabocca Coffee. Ensure that farmers receive premiums to produce special coffee by sorting the best ripe red cherries and diligent care during drying. These premiums are reimbursed to farmers' groups by investing in drying beds, cooperative tools and some pulping equipment.
About Yirgacheffe
Irgachefe (also known as Yirgacheffe) is a town in central southern Ethiopia located in the Gedeo district; it is also the administrative center of Yirgacheffe woreda (or district), a coffee-growing area that we are all familiar with. Yirgacheffe is bordered by Kochere in the south, Oromia district in the west, Wenago in the north and Bule in the east. These are our household names in the world of professional coffee. Coffee from Yirgacheffe is located between 1800 and 2200 meters above sea level and is mainly grown by small farmers.
For many people, the cream of the Ethiopian crop is Yirgacheffe, which is considered by many to be the best Ethiopian coffee, with its characteristic floral, rich body and aromatic aroma.
Interestingly, the three "brands" related to Ethiopian coffee, Yirgacheffe,Sidamo&Harrar, are trademarks with Ethiopian ownership.
