Learn first-hand about the coffee making process and various Hawaiian delicacies at Greenwell Farm in Kona Coffee area.

About Kona, coffee drinkers have heard of his acidity and acidity, but after spending some time in Hawaii, I found that the term Kona can only represent the coffee beans produced in the state of Hawaii, and their quality and taste vary greatly from product to product, and there is no way to accurately describe it, because different estates / companies may grow / buy different beans, so the product itself represents different plant fruits. The time of harvesting coffee beans is different (I know that some coffee companies will give different names to coffee beans harvested in different months), the screening process after coffee beans harvest may also be different (especially when the screening procedure will determine the grading of coffee beans, extra fancy, fancy or estates), and then the most important thing is the way and degree of roasting, which will bring different taste. So I would like to briefly introduce some of the products I have drunk.

I drink coffee by using the semi-automatic household espresso Rancilio Audrey and the bean grinder Mazzer Mini. My wife sometimes uses auto-drip 's American dripping machine to cook, accompanied by a $20 USD bean chopper. I don't bake beans myself, so I buy cooked beans directly.

{supermarket brand}

Generally speaking, Hawaiian supermarkets generally have dozens of beans with Kona names, but most of them are not 100% kona, some are 10% or 30% Kona, and most of them are seasoned beans or flour (adjusted to include coconut, vanilla, Hawaiian beans, chocolate, Irish cream.... and so on.) Since I am not a seasoned coffee lover, I will not introduce it. I think if you want to drink mixed coffee, instead of buying seasoned coffee beans, it is better to buy coffee with syrup or a small amount of wine to flavor.

These products are usually available in department stores or supermarkets.

Brand-1: Lion Coffee (Lion head)

Logo like this, usually packaged with a red background

This brand seems to be the so-called Obama state banquet designated card. It seems that some high-end department store and supermarket in Taipei have imported it, but the price seems to be more than half a pound 700 NTD, which is quite beastly.

This 100% Kona (24 Karat Kona, whole bean) product is my favorite in the supermarket grade, usually the official online price is $13 USD half a pound, but in the supermarket in Honolulu, the price is usually $7-10 USD depending on the discount, the taste is very typical for auto-drip adjustment, the baking is a little too deep, so the acid site is not obvious, but compared with other supermarket grades of 100% Kona The smell of the Lion head brand is a little better, and it is better to taste. Espresso is just so-so (in fact, it tastes like 10% Kona of the same brand, if you drink espresso, you can buy 10%), it's better to be a latte, it's better to be Americano (espresso to hot water) and auto-drip. I haven't tried siphon and card sharpener.

The brand has many other products, mostly seasoning products, which are usually powder, and Honolulu supermarket prices are usually at 3.5-8 usd half a pound.

Brand-2: Mulvadi Coffee (Mowati)

圖檔

This brand is my wife's favorite supermarket brand, code name is Golden Little Girl, because his 100% Kona products are golden packaging, painted with a little girl, this brand of products are relatively few, there seems to be no official website! However, this brand makes instant coffee (I forget how it tastes), but the 100% Kona of this brand is not bad. In my mind, it is probably the same grade as Lion head (24 Karat Kona), and the seasoning is a little different. It is a bit like the comparison between Sennheiser MX500 and AKG K314P. Usually, the price of Honolulu supermarket is half a pound 7-9USD, imported from Taiwan and sold by someone on PC Home. It seems to sell 425 NTD, compared with Lion head. The selling price in Taiwan is more humane.

Brand-3: Royal (Royal)

圖檔

This brand is also one of the many products, but it tastes relatively common. It feels as if the beans are not fresh. Generally, 100% Kona tastes carelessly, and there is nothing to worry about. But some other products will be very thunderous (personal perception). I want to throw away the whole bag after a sip. I haven't been buying it recently.

Brand-4: Hawaiian Isles (Hawaiian Islands)

圖檔

The feature of this brand is that the cover is full of coconut trees and sky, mainly selling mixed beans, that is, there may be only 10%-30% Kona mixed beans, this brand is most commonly seen in supermarkets and ABC Stores, but his beans seem to have been kept for years. I can't drink any advantages. Although it is not difficult to buy this brand in Taiwan, I recommend not to buy it.

Of course, there are many other brands and different products in the supermarket. I haven't tried them one by one. I have bought one or two other brands and will drink them later. The above are all product brands that can be seen everywhere in Hawaii, basically with popular tastes and low prices, so the quality is difficult to guarantee. If there are coffee peers who want to explore the potential of Kona, or use their soul and life to study a cup of Kona, then these brands are a waste of time. The better Kona should be ordered directly from the manor or the small company of Local. Because the amount of beans from the manor is relatively small, so quality control is easier, but also easier to communicate, later in the introduction.

Ps. There are two proper nouns that can represent high-price and high-quality volume labels, "Organic" and "Peaberry". Some products will be labeled with these two labels and then sell more expensive. Organic certainly stands for "organic". Nonsense, can coffee beans be inorganic? However, the term Organic seems to represent a certain farming procedure. In Taiwan, there is no certain standard. The merchant says that he is "organic" and is "organic", just like the so-called "monitoring". However, in the United States, I do not know whether Organic has a strict standard. I have limited experience. As long as the purchase is marked with organic, it will be much more expensive. But the quality is usually obviously better, and if there is a lot of money, it is usually worth a try. And Peaberry, according to Wikepedia Wikipedia, is an one-off coffee fruit, accounting for about 5% of the total fruit yield, which simply means selected. Like Organic, I accept peaberry as a businessman, but according to my limited experience, Peaberry usually has a strong aroma before it is imported, and it is almost the same after it is imported.

Relatively high-quality Kona, usually to find a smaller Local company or farm direct marketing website, these estates / small companies provide Kona coffee beans, although the price is sometimes as high as twice the price of supermarket products, but the quality is much better, just like AKG K271 has the difference of ear expansion, if you want to rush Kona beans, these are my pocket list.

Local brand-5: Mountain Thunder (Daleishan)

圖檔

This brand of coffee is what I actually saw in the organic supermarket over there when I went to the Big Island (Kona is a regional name of the Big Island of Hawaii). My wife thought the packaging was very gorgeous, so she bought a bag of expensive Peaberry to drink back. The packaging of this brand is all with small black flowers (red or green). I have only drunk a bag of peaberry. It smells good before the entrance, but it is not bad after the entrance, and it is obviously much better than any supermarket. The freshness is also good, but the price is very expensive. A pack of more than $30 USD,peaberry costs $34 USD a pound, and organic beans can reach $37 USD a pound! What a robbery.

Manor Brand-6: Smith Farms (Smith Farm) recommended!

圖檔

This is the website of the direct operation of the farm in the Kona district of the big island, which basically looks like a family-run farm, selling beans of estates grade (I think the so-called estates, fancy and extra fancy grades don't care too much, grading and tasting are two different things). This bean sells raw beans, as well as ripe beans and flour, and its main feature is that it is cheap and fresh (compared with other families, one pound is easily more than 30USD, this one pound of ripe beans is only 20USD. Almost the price of supermarket grade), and can buy more than five pounds instead of baking, I usually order light baked beans with him, so that cooking espresso can show sour characteristics, although cooking espresso is a little bit unbalanced, but a little finer and tighter can get a good espresso, at present, this is the main force of my coffee. This one is said to have been sold to Taiwanese customers, so it can be shipped to Taiwan.

Manor Brand-7: Blair's Estate & Coffee Times (Blair Manor Coffee time) recommended!

This is the package of organic beans.

圖檔

Coffee Times should be an agent company, originally acting for many other beans, such as Guatemala, Brazil, etc., but recently thought that Kona sold better, so he took away other beans and left only the high-priced Kona.

This brand boasts that it is baked after ordering, and it is mainly produced in Kauai. Now I think the Kona coffee beans produced on Kauai Island seem to taste better than the authentic ones on Oshima Kona. The reason is that this Blair's Estate, his beans are not cheap, but they do taste different from others, especially his organic beans, the packaging is not very impressive, but it is really extraordinary, I highly recommend! These are the best beans I've ever had in Hawaii, and they taste very fresh. I haven't had extra fancy or peaberry yet. I waited for a while to finish drinking the stock on hand before buying it.

*. Add: this is what I learned before drinking Heavenly Hawaiian. After drinking HH Extra Fancy, I no longer think that beans in the Kona area of the big island will lose to the Kona of Kauai island. As for which tastes better, Blair's Organic Beans or HH Kona, this is more difficult to compete directly, because I don't have two bean grinders, so I can't drink / compare two kinds of beans at the same time.

Manor Brand-8: Heavenly Hawaiian (Paradise Hawaii) is recommended!

圖檔

This place has a long history. It is basically a joint selling website of Heavenly Hawaiian, a manor and other manors located in the Kona district of the big island. They are often named after Kona competitions. There are many players in Taiwan who will order raw beans to go home and bake them. They can be baked by Baidu. I just bought it and haven't drunk it yet. It should be very good.
