Silicon Valley's "bulletproof coffee" butter and coffee diet
Bulletproof Coffee, fueled by the dual effects of ketogenic diets and celebrity blessing, has become increasingly popular recently, but it can be more than just a cup of black coffee mixed with cream and coconut oil or whipped. How do you make the right bulletproof coffee? Founder Dave Asprey explained his development process and explained that to make a truly effective cup of bulletproof coffee, if you don't use the right ingredients, even if it tastes good, it doesn't matter.
Bulletproof coffee inspired by Xizang butter tea
I first realized the power of blended cream because of a petite woman from Xizang. She lives nearly 5,600 meters above sea level, near Mt. Kailash) remote mountainous areas of Xizang. In 2004, I staggered into her homestay, chilled by the thin air of about-23 degrees Celsius outside, and she lifted my spirits with a cup of smooth, traditional yak butter tea-a drink I loved. My inner biohacker asks,"Why does drinking this make me feel so good in such thin air? Why would a nomad who lives in a tent and travels light bother himself with a bulky blender or hand mixer?" These questions are part of the reason I invented bulletproof coffee recipes.
Bulletproof coffee is important to mix the right ingredients.
When I got home, I made tea and mixed it with cream in a blender, but all I got was a greasy cup of tea. Obviously something different from what we were drinking in Xizang. I bought some premium tea from local Chinese merchants, but it didn't have the magical effect I remembered, so I went to Whole Foods near my home and another specialty food store and bought every brand of premium cream from around the world to try it out to see if cream was the key variable-and it was.
After trying each cream, I discovered that the secret was to use salt-free cream from grass-fed cattle. Lucky people can buy it from local farmers. For the rest of us, Kerrygold Pure Irish Butter is available in the US and EU, and Anchor Butter from new Zealand is available in most parts of Asia and Australia. These are the best alternatives to grass-fed butter.
I learned from my own anti-aging research that coconut oil has great health benefits, so I started experimenting with adding coconut milk and coconut oil to tea, but the taste was too strong for tea. So I switched from tea to coffee, which is another of my favorites (besides cream, of course). Coffee and coconut oil go better than tea, and the finishing touch is to add one or two tablespoons of MCT oil (coconut extract) and one or two tablespoons of unsalted grass butter or ghee to the coffee. Together, these ingredients create the strongest, tastiest, and most performance-enhancing coffee I've ever tasted-bulletproof coffee. For more than seven years, I've started my day with a bulletproof cup of coffee every morning, using the extra energy and brainpower it provides to crack my own body while thriving my career and even succeeding in every aspect of my life. Bulletproof coffee restored my brain to normal functioning, freeing me from the urge to eat and giving thousands of others the same results.
The Three Elements of Bulletproof Coffee
The full bulletproof coffee formula kept me slim even when I tried to gain weight by eating more than 4,000 calories a day without exercising. I was determined to understand the reasons behind it. The first beneficial component of coffee is caffeine, and caffeine, no matter where it comes from, is not simply a "boost." Because caffeine prevents inflammation in the brain, it may help slow cognitive decline and reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Gregory, MD, University of Illinois, Iii Iii. "We found a new signal that activates inflammatory symptoms associated with neurodegenerative diseases in the brain, and caffeine seems to block this activation," said Gregory Freund, a professor at the University of Chicago. Caffeine also increases insulin sensitivity in healthy people, which is important for sustained weight loss.
Drinking any type of coffee has both short-and long-term effects on the brain. The short-term effects of coffee on mood may be due to changes in serotonin and dopamine activity, while the potential long-term effects may be related to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. But as you read earlier, it matters what kind of coffee you drink. When I drank coffee with mold, I could sense that something was negatively affecting the normal functioning of the brain, so I began to study how to solve this problem, and I got the expected results.
I started experimenting with coffee, trying to figure out which farming method would produce a completely pollution-free coffee bean that would give me the best performance every time I drank it. It took me ten years to figure out every step of the way that performance-lowering toxins have a chance to form in coffee, examining the process of growing, harvesting, and transporting coffee beans, to create a reliable and perfect source of coffee beans that will make you feel energetic every time you drink them, while "regular" coffee will make you headache, nervous, and irritable.
After I tested my coffee beans for toxins, I asked volunteers to try them and see if they changed significantly. Their responses were quite positive, but I knew it was probably due to the placebo effect, meaning that the difference they felt was probably because they expected to feel it. To find out, I devised a study comparing my toxin-tested coffee beans with coffee from local coffee shops to see if there was any difference, if any, in their effects. The results of this experiment confirmed my own findings and confirmed the results of my asking several friends to act as guinea pigs.
A scientific experiment on the relationship between coffee and cream
In order to conduct this experiment, I first applied to the Human Trials Review Committee, which is responsible for reviewing experiments on humans to ensure that the experiments are safe and harmless to humans. Working with a Stanford researcher, I devised a statistically rigorous test. We recruited fifty-four people from the Bulletproof Executive Facebook page and asked them to take two sets of cognitive function tests daily for four weeks while drinking different combinations of cream and coffee:
Lab-tested Upgraded Coffee (black)
Coffee made with beans from a local shop (black)
Lab-tested Upgraded Coffee with Butter
Coffee made with beans from a local shop with butter
We didn't test MCT oil, short-chain C8 MCT oil, or coconut oil because the original experiment was already too long and the number of people who dropped out was a problem. Nevertheless, the results were conclusive: coffee served in the local coffee shop scored lower on cognitive function tests than coffee served in the upgraded coffee, with or without added cream, and the difference was statistically significant.
We tested seven different brain executive functions using standard psychological tests, including reverse spatial memory span, coding, classification, color words, finger tapping, visual pairing, and 3-back tasks. Six out of seven tests showed improved executive function in the brain when the upgraded coffee tested was compared to regular coffee from around the United States. Surprisingly, the results of one of the tests showed that the addition of cream only helped slightly, even regressed executive function, and even the type of coffee did not show much difference. Cream works because it eliminates hunger and allows willpower to work freely. Although cream doesn't directly stimulate the brain like coffee, it doesn't reduce your performance.
Note: The 3-back task is the third level of difficulty in the n-back task. The n-back task is to give the subject a series of stimuli (either visual or auditory) and ask the subject to respond when the current stimulus is the same as the nth previous stimulus. This method is often used to stimulate brain activity in subjects undergoing neuroimaging.
A test of cognitive function for regular coffee beans
Obviously it's important to use the right ingredients, but the way bulletproof coffee is brewed can also affect health and performance. Certain coffee-specific oils, such as kahweol and coffestol, are potent neuroprotective anti-inflammatory substances that protect the body from oxidative stress and DNA damage8. Brewing coffee with metal filters, such as French filters, gold filters, and espresso machines, can retain these precious coffee oils during brewing, so that they can work after you drink them.

It's also important to mix cream and MCT oil into coffee in a blender, rather than just stirring with a spoon, because a blender breaks the cream into something called micelles, allowing the body to easily use fat for energy. Your bile also makes vesicles, but the more vesicles you have, the more fat your body can use. This means that mixing cream into coffee with a blender helps the body use fat as an energy source. If you peel off a cream wrapper and eat it with coffee just like a snickers bar, the results won't be the same. I know because I tried!
Once you know how beneficial coffee is when brewed correctly with the low-toxin beans I tested, it's time to take a closer look at the other ingredients of bulletproof coffee to understand why it has energy-boosting, fat-burning results.
Imagine you are a computer hacker who breaks into a new computer only to discover that another hacker has already gotten there first and taken control of the system. You want to set up your control system and take action to prevent another hacker from interfering. Your gut bacteria are that "other hacker" and the system they control gives you the urge to eat and allows your body to store more fat than usual.

Your body has a sophisticated system for controlling fat burning and storage. The liver makes a protein called fasting induced adipose factor (FIAF). One function of FIAF is to inhibit an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase (LPL), which allows the body to start storing fat. This means that when FIAF is high, the body burns more fat, and your liver produces the right amount of FIAF according to your body's needs. The problem is that gut bacteria also make FIAF, but the bacteria manipulate FIAF to achieve their desired results. When your diet is high in fat and sugar, gut bacteria are thought to actually inhibit FIAF, thus causing your body to store fat instead of burning it. This is not to say that all gut bacteria are bad; the right bacteria in the right place will be good for you, but too much or the wrong bacteria can lead to obesity.
Fortunately, there are ways to "anti-hack" other hackers. Intestinal bacteria are hungry when they lack starch or sugar. Hungry bacteria make FIAF, which allows you to burn fat; when gut bacteria have enough sugar or starch, they stop making FIAF, and you start storing fat. MCT oils, and especially the shortest medium-chain fats, put pressure on the overall gut bacteria, and if you take these oils in conjunction with fasting, you actively interfere with the gut bacteria's intention to store extra fat. Polyphenols in coffee are also probiotics like Bacteroides, which are more commonly found in the gut of lean people. You can't increase this bacteria with supplements, you have to feed it with good food.
Drinking fat-infused coffee temporarily suppresses all gut bacteria and then provides food for lean bacteria to reproduce-something I can actually see from my own gut tests, as well as uBiome tests shared with me by other bulletproof eaters. They had above-average numbers of Bacteroides, which are associated with keeping slim, and fewer Firmicutes, which are associated with getting fat. For optimal health, you should have some of each, because changing the ratio can affect how much energy you have and your ability to regulate your weight.
One study in rats showed that coffee plus a diet high in fat, even if it included unhealthy fat, may reduce weight, obesity rates, liver triglycerides and calorie intake. In addition, coffee is more beneficial to body composition, and also allows the critical ratio of Firmicutes and Bacteroides to reach an optimal state. Coffee also improves the circulation of short-chain fatty acids, which is also good for the gut. In this study, the mice became insulin resistant, as did people on a long-term very low-carb diet. (Bulletproof diets solve this problem by eating meaningful portions of carbohydrates at least once a week.)
Replacing milk with cream in coffee has many benefits. Coffee contains a performance-enhancing antioxidant polyphenol called chlorogenic acid. When you add milk, whipped cream, whipped cream, and most creamers to coffee, you are adding casein, a milk protein, and the bioavailability of polyphenols is reduced by three or four times. Fermented cream has very little casein and no ghee at all, which means that when you replace milk or whipped cream with cream, you get three or four times as many antioxidants from coffee! You already know that butter also contains butyric acid, which can help restore intestinal health and directly reduce inflammation in the brain.
The coconut extract or MCT oil in bulletproof coffee adds a more unique benefit to this formula. Just remember to increase the amount of MCT oil you use little by little. Adding too much at once can cause what many bulletproof eaters call "pant-bottom disaster." Far better than the pant-disaster is ketosis, a beneficial state that allows the body to burn fat instead of sugar for energy. Normally, the body burns carbohydrates for fuel, and when it runs out of carbohydrates, it starts converting fat into glycerol for energy.
In this process of fat metabolism, the liver produces ketones by-products, and when you have a lot of ketones in your blood, your body is in a state of ketosis, which burns more fat. If your diet contains very little carbohydrates, the right amount of protein and a lot of healthy fat, you may enter a state of ketosis, but this is a state that is difficult to achieve and maintain.
Bulletproof coffee breaks ketosis by using the shortest medium-chain triglyceride (C8 MCT), making it easier for the body to produce ketones. A study found that as long as two tablespoons of this oil are added to the diet of healthy young men, nine percent of their brain metabolism is carried out by burning ketones, even if they eat carbohydrates. In general, after eating carbohydrates, no brain metabolism is produced through ketones. In other words, using the right C8 to extract coconut oil instead of regular coconut oil makes you burn more fat more easily and feel more energetic at the same time.
Most people can get into ketosis by not eating carbohydrates, but they don't need it as long as they drink bulletproof coffee in the morning. I tested it myself: I ate a total of two cups of sushi dinner, and in the morning I used a blood ketone meter similar to a blood glucose meter to measure how many ketones were in the blood. The results show that my blood ketone concentration is ○ one, if the concentration is ○ 6 or higher, it means that you officially enter the ketosis state. I drank a cup of bulletproof coffee with C8 MCT oil and my blood ketone concentration soared to ○ 7 in 30 minutes. Drinking bulletproof coffee on an empty stomach is a shortcut to mild ketosis, has the benefit of increasing mental concentration, and reduces eating impulses. If you are on a regular coconut oil and low-carb diet, you need to be very careful to control your carbohydrate intake for at least three days to achieve the same level of ketosis.
Many people want to try to make bulletproof coffee with beans bought from local coffee shops. This actually works, and although the results may not be effective, I still provide some basic principles for finding high-quality, low-toxin coffee beans. The first step is to go to the most upscale coffee shop near your home and hope they have their own bean roaster. If you don't know which store is the most upscale, use a web browser to search for a bean dryer in your city, then take a closer look at the store's web page and feel that the store's operator is a coffee fanatic (which is a good thing). Or just bored college students (which is not good). Plus, it may sound weird, but of the hundreds of cities I've visited on business trips, the best coffee shops usually have an unusually high number of tattoos and all kinds of piercings (not coffee on waiters). So find a coffee shop, it is best to have the aroma of roasted coffee and some employees who look very "personality".
A shop that takes the time to pick out good coffee will usually choose at least one kind of coffee beans that will improve your performance and taste, but the store itself probably won't know which kind of coffee beans is the safest. If you ask, the store will usually tell you that their coffee beans are free of mycotoxin, but since mycotoxin has to be measured in 1/1000000000 units, no one can tell with the naked eye whether there is it or not (which is why I use experimental testing! ) sticking to a single source of coffee instead of drinking coffee from multiple sources can help you reduce the amount of toxins in your coffee. Coffee beans produced in Central America are usually less polluted than in other regions, but not absolutely.
It takes a lot of time to try again and again, and it doesn't necessarily lead to good results, so I always take the coffee beans I've tested with me when I travel, because I know I can be sure that the coffee beans are almost toxin-free. It allows me to improve more and maintain my good performance for longer than any other coffee I find. I regard simplicity and laziness as virtues, so I don't waste time. It's not a pretentious coffee sutra, it's just that it's so important for me to be at my best at all times!
