What is the flavor and taste of Gesha Coffee in Rose Summer at Finca Sophia Coffee Farm in Panama? How about Panamanian Finca Sophia coffee beans?
In the lush rainforest of Panama, at a dazzling height of 2100 meters, a vibrant coffee farm is laying the foundation for a new era of sustainable development. Only the legendary Gesha breed is planted, the farm is the tallest in Central America, if not one of the tallest farms, it finally brings its first harvest to market, and it is spectacular. Finca Sofia was founded in 2008 and is owned by Equator Coffee's own Brooke McDonnell and Helen Russell (you can read our main Q & A with Helen between April and May 2016), as well as David Pohl, former coffee director of Willem Boot of Boot Coffees and Equator. Over the past eight years, owners have embarked on an unusual and unique journey as they try to reinvent the way coffee farms look and work. They say their motto is quality rather than quantity, and prefer a method (height, tree spacing, pruning, etc.) that can improve quality even when planting, planting and honing methods.
Finca Sophia is an experimental farm because coffee from Central America is rarely grown at 2100 meters. In many ways, owners are plotting their own routes, choosing this farm to challenge conventional wisdom, break boundaries, and create special, rare coffees. Their motto is quality rather than quantity, preferring a method (height, tree spacing, pruning, etc.) that can improve quality even when planting, planting and honing methods.
Knowing that the farmland is compacted soil for grazing and vegetable cultivation, owners have developed a sustainable Finca Sophia. It now plants hundreds of shade trees and thousands of coffee trees to establish a buffer zone between Parque Amistad Internacional and the surrounding largely unforested agricultural areas. At present, half of the 20 hectares have been planted, while the rest of the farm is forest or is in the process of planting.
Finca Sophia's loyal employees are led by its manager, Kelly Hartmann, a third-generation coffee grower whose family pioneered coffee cultivation in this part of Panama in the 1920s. Six workers from the Ngobe Bugle indigenous group in Panama and their families work for Kelly on the farm. They bring their culture and traditions to the farm, and we thank them for their commitment to making Finca Sophia a reality.
Finca Sophia's 2017 world-class coffee harvest. Located in the highlands of Panama, 2100 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest coffee farms in Central America. Finca Sophia was founded in 2008, specializing in the cultivation of rare and famous Gesha varieties. This legendary coffee variety is highly associated with the extreme degree of coffee cultivation to produce unique coffee. In 2016, Finca Sophia's first harvest was chosen as the winner of the American Good Food Awards award. As if that wasn't enough, Finca Sophia won the first prize in the famous Panamanian Best Coffee Competition in the fiercely competitive Washed Gesha category in May. Finca Sophia is one of the best coffee farms in Panama.

Trees derived from the rare Ethiopian plant variety Gesha (also spelled geisha). With its elegant slender beans and unique floral and crisp, usually chocolate cups, the Gesha variety continues to be one of the most unique coffees in the world. This is a dry or "natural" version of Gesha, which means that the beans are dried inside the fruit rather than after the fruit has been removed, such as wet processing or "washed" coffee.
