Coffee with Chinese characteristics-Xinzhai Coffee

Xinzhai Village is located in Lujiang Town, Longyang District, Baoshan City, Yunnan Province. Its geographical location, elevation, water and history make the coffee here unique.

Since all 800 acres of arable land is devoted to coffee cultivation, the plantation is quite obvious on Google Maps, but the location of the village itself is uncertain. This is not uncommon in rural areas like Xinzhai. The nearest location provided by Google map is an administrative level: Lujiangba Township.

Xinzhai village and its surrounding villages are sandwiched between the Salween River and Gaoligong Mountain. The Salween River, known as the Nujiang River in China, originates from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, flows through a small part of Yunnan, and then enters Myanmar, forming the largest river basin in Southeast Asia. Gaoligong Mountain is a national nature reserve with unique biodiversity in China.

In 2003, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized it as part of the World Heritage site, known as the "three parallel Rivers" protected area in Yunnan. The characteristics of the region contribute to its unique environmental value, including three major parallel rivers-the Yangtze River, the Mekong River and the Salween River-separated by mountains up to 7000 meters above sea level, sometimes just 30 kilometers apart. If you cross Gaoligong Mountain from Xinzhai, within 200 kilometers, you will reach the Burmese border and the Irrawaddy River, another major river in Asia. Every mountain and valley has animals and plants that are not found anywhere else. These geographical features make Yunnan the most biologically and ethnically diverse region in China.

China has no long history of growing or drinking coffee. For Xinzhai, several 100-year-old coffee trees in their backyards can be a proud reminder of their unusual village history, but how their grandfather got coffee (perhaps from their tea and horse trading lifestyle) is not easy to confirm.

Yunnan and Hainan are two coffee producing areas in China, both of which have subtropical areas within their borders. The climate of Xinzhai is not a subtropical climate, but a terrace of valley pioneering, dry and hot monsoon blowing from the Nujiang River Valley. This makes Xinzhai, at 25 degrees latitude, the northernmost coffee growing village in China. Xinzhai has a slope of 90-1200 meters above sea level, and it is also the highest coffee growing area in China and even in the world. High altitude slows the growth of coffee, but also hinders the destructive coffee rust. Xinzhai Coffee grows Arabica coffee beans.

Over the years, Xinzhai Village has sold Yunnan small particle coffee directly to consumers. Unlike neighboring villages, which supply big brands such as Starbucks and Nestle one by one, Xinzhai wants to maintain its brand and is eager to grow the best coffee in China and the world.

Confidence comes from Xinzhai near Gaoligong Mountain. The 5000-meter-high, 600km-long north-south mountains provide basic ecological services for coffee plantations. An 11-kilometer canal provides quality and sustainable water for irrigation. Despite frequent droughts in this part of China, Xinzhai people have never seen the mountains and rivers dry up.

Coffee cultivation has been steadily changing the village economy. Mr. Xie Xianwen from Xinzhai, later the founder of Xinzhai Coffee Cooperative, had a cup of coffee in a cafe during a trip in Kunming. This cup of coffee costs 35 yuan. At that time, the money could buy a meal for a family of five. Xie returned to his village and suggested to his mother that her land be converted into coffee. Today, most of the 500 households in Xinzhai grow coffee. Cooperatives and tour groups have signed a cooperation agreement, hoping to promote the coffee industry through professional tourism, so that customers can visit villages and experience coffee culture.
