YCFCU Hafursa Coop Wash Native Variety Blend Flavor?

Hefusa "was originally the name of a village located in Ethiopia Town. It is the smallest hierarchical unit of the local four administrative regions, namely Region/Zone/Woreda/Kebele. The smallest unit is called Kebele, which is about the size of a village in rural Taiwan-

The four-level administrative divisions of Hofsa Village are thus as follows:

Provincial SNNPR (Province of Nationalities and Peoples of the South)

Gedeo Zone

Town Yirgacheffe Woreda

Village Hafursa Kelebe

So Harfusa or Hafursa village is located in the range of Yegashefi town. In fact, it is close to the west of Yegashefi town downtown. As long as you walk out from the west road of the town, you can immediately enter the range of Harfusa village. The processing plant of Hafusa cooperative is also very close to Yegashefi town. From the aerial photos of Google, it is less than 500 meters away from the town!

The coffee berries of Hofsa Co-operative processing plant come mainly from the hillsides in the west of the processing plant in the range of Hofsa village, from 1850 meters to the highest 2100 meters above sea level, and also from the hillsides adjacent to Konga village in the south of the processing plant, from 1870 meters to the highest 2000 meters above sea level. The locations of the two regional coffee gardens are excellent in terms of altitude and slope. This constitutes the basic condition for the cooperative to produce excellent works. In fact, Hofsa Cooperative was established very early, as early as 1975. It can be said that it was the pioneer of Ethiopia's first wave of cooperative movement. Although the grass-roots cooperative had good intentions and internal operation was not bad, the members of Hofsa Cooperative did not benefit much in the following 20 years. The reason was that it was limited by the existing huge private production and marketing system.

Cooperatives had to sell beans to private exporters through an old-fashioned auction system, they had no direct access to foreign buyers, and the United States was still in the infancy of the specialty coffee industry.(Speciality Coffee was invented in 1974) In that time and space background, good beans can only be sold cheaply to exporters and mixed into large batches. Fortunately, with the global specialty coffee industry beginning to flourish, international buyers demand for super high quality yeja sherbet is strong, and the trend of specialty coffee people going deep into the production area to find good beans is also unstoppable. Finally, grassroots cooperatives in various villages are further gathered. In the early summer of 2002, the Yerga Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU) was formed!

Full name Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperatives Union

The Yejia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU) is the most powerful union in Gedeo Zone today. Although many people think that the alliance is the upper organization of the cooperative and the upper authority to manage the various cooperatives, this understanding is not correct! In fact, the grass-roots cooperatives in each village can freely choose whether to join or withdraw from the alliance. At the same time, the decision-making members of the alliance are also sent by the cooperatives. The general manager of the alliance is appointed by the meeting of the management and supervision committee, and then the general manager is responsible for leading the operation team of the alliance office. Therefore, the whole cooperative alliance system is actually a bottom-up system. The farmers at the bottom gather into grass-roots cooperatives, and then the cooperatives gather into alliances. In other words, the real boss of the alliance. It's actually a cooperative!

This explains why when the "general manager" of the alliance discusses things with the "managers" of village cooperatives, it is not like a top-to-bottom attitude, but rather a good interaction of mutual respect and mutual concern. At present, the alliance has obtained an export license issued by the Ethiopian government and has become the export agent of village cooperatives. It is the window for village cooperatives to contact foreign buyers. This allows cooperatives to finally get rid of the control of old private exporters. It also allows international fine coffee buyers to bypass the old system and further develop the fine coffee industry together with the farmers of the origin!

Therefore, the alliance has also changed from a simple "exporter" role to a middleman who transmits the needs and requirements of international fine coffee, and it is also a matchmaking platform to help various cooperatives find good buyers. This structure not only allows fine coffee buyers to directly designate excellent batches of visiting and purchasing cooperatives through the alliance, but also allows international resources to directly enter various villages in the yejia sherry producing area through the alliance-cooperative network. Over the past 10 years, we have gone deep into the production area to improve the quality and value of the plan and certification, among which the most well-known and effective

Fair Trade, Organic Farming, and Operation Cherry Red! Until today, according to Ethiopia's official statistics, exporters with an export volume of more than 1,000 tons (at least 50 TEUs) and the top three with the highest average price per kilogram of raw beans exported, YCFCU has always been on the list every year! Prices are often triple those of other large private exporters!! Of course, this price also fully reflects the excellent quality. It can be seen that the alliance's operation strategy of introducing foreign resources and the efforts of various cooperatives in improving quality are very successful! In just over a decade, YCFCU has developed to a total of 23 cooperatives, gathering the strength of about 45,000 local farmers in one breath and affecting the daily livelihood of as many as 300,000 local people, young and old! More than 9000 tons of ine are produced annually, affecting the quality of at least 300 million cups of coffee, so important to the global specialty coffee industry that
