What's the difference between BOP auction, COE extraordinary Cup and Red bid auction?
BOP, Best Panama
What is BOP auction?
As the first raw bean event in the world, the emergence of BOP can also be regarded as a game against the Panamanian boutique coffee industry at that time, and successfully opened up a blue ocean of quality for Panama through this game, where the annual auction price of beans is hundreds of dollars.
In 1995, seven coffee producing families in Panama jointly established the Panamanian Fine Coffee Association (Specialty Coffee Association of Panama, hereinafter referred to as SCAP), and in 1996, they established the first Panamanian raw bean competition-the best Panama (Best of Panama, hereinafter referred to as BOP).
Since 2004, SCAP has organized the first Best of Panama (BOP) Best Panama auction, with only 11 grades of beans, with an average price of $2.89 per pound. By 2012, this figure has reached $24.83, which has greatly encouraged and promoted the development of boutique coffee. The famous Hacienda La Esmeralda, Don Pachi Estate, Carmen Estate and Elida Estate are all founding manors.
In 2013, the highest gold standard of BOP rinse rose group exceeded US $160per pound, while the highest standard gold of Sun Rose Summer group was won by Hacienda La Esmeralda Rose Summer with more than US $350USD / lb.
May 2017 Best Panamanian Bean Competition (The Best of Panama/BOP) Jade Manor (Hacienda La Esmeralda) Summer Rose auction Price reached a record-breaking US $601 / lb
In 2018, BOP ushered in a new grouping method. This year, it is divided into four groups: Rosa solarization (honey treatment) group, rose summer water washing group, traditional variety sun drying (honey treatment) group, traditional variety water washing group and Pacamara group.
At 7: 00 a.m. on July 20, 18, all 49 batches of award-winning coffee beans launched by BOP were auctioned for about 6 hours and 30 minutes. Among them, BOP-GN-1 Rose Summer sold for $803 / lb, breaking the record for the highest transaction price. (BOP gave birth to Super Rose Summer washing Sofia in 2017 and Sun Jade Rose Summer, which bid as high as US $601 / lb. ), is the "bid king" of this year's auction.
Rose summer varieties: green leaf (Green Tip) rose summer variety and copper leaf (Bronze Tip) rose summer variety. Green leaf rose summer is characterized by floral fragrance, strong sour taste and sweet taste. On the contrary, the weight and sweetness of copper leaf rose summer are mainly, and the sour taste is not obvious.
COE,COE extraordinary Cup
What on earth is COE?
Red wine industry has AOC level, coffee has COE level, we often hear that this is coe level, coe competition manor, the current national boutique bean competition is either CoE or SCAA mode, 11 major coffee producing countries adopt Coe cup test as the national competition mode.
COE
COE is a boutique coffee competition mode, the full name is Cup Of Excellence, is a boutique coffee competition system commonly used by 10 major coffee producing countries in the world. Coffee farmers will have to take part in at least five cup tests during the three-week competition, and there will be another round of extra matches for the coffee that is in the top 10. Coffee farmers who can be selected as the winners of the COE will not only recognize the excellent quality of their coffee, but also earn a lot of money from the auction. With good auction revenue, coffee farmers have a better chance to improve their quality, and consumers have more opportunities to drink good coffee, forming a virtuous circle.
COE extraordinary Cup
This evaluation system was adopted by coffee production groups in Brazil in 1999 and is now widely used in Colombia, Guatemala, Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
In 1999, "Coffee Excellence" was founded by a Ms. Susie Spindler, headquartered in Portland, USA. The English name of "Coffee Excellence" is The Alliance for Coffee Excellence, or ACE. In that year, it hosted the coffee auction competition in 11 countries, which is called COE Excellence Cup. The full name of COE in English is: Cup of Excellence, an extended abbreviated Chinese translation: excellent Cup or extraordinary Cup.
The 11 countries include Brazil, Colombia, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Rwanda, Mexico and Burundi.
ACE is a legally registered non-profit organization that hosts COE events to improve the quality of coffee grown and harvested by farmers. COE establishes continuity from growing to baking, roasting and sales. It includes a strict cup testing system, a fair and open selection of the country of origin, and a complete set of origin-to-coffee shop information system for international online open auctions.
In the past, 11 countries held COE every year. In 2009 the Bolivian country of origin suspended the selection of COE. In 2015 last year, in order to change and upgrade the entire COE system architecture, the current ACE Council Chairman Geoff Watts announced the suspension of five countries' COE selection in 2016 (Burundi, El Salvador, Mexico, Nicaragua and Rwanda). These are only temporary pauses and will be reopened in the future, and new countries of origin will be added.
So the countries of origin participating in the 2016 selection will only be held in Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Honduras.
Frequency and process of COE:
This meeting is held once a year, and the growers of fine coffee submit their best coffee beans to the national or international censors of the meeting. After at least five reviews, the most advanced coffee beans will be awarded the title of COE.
The CoE competition has strict competition rules, and the winning manor must go through five hurdles:
The first is the stage of domestic competition:
1, the presiding judge and the domestic judging unit make a preliminary screening for the samples of coffee farmers, and the qualified ones carry out the cup test of the second level.
2. The domestic evaluation stage is also divided into two rounds. First, all the qualified raw bean samples will be baked and evaluated cup by cup, which usually takes about three days. All samples will be evaluated according to the CoE form, and those with 84 points will be rematch.
3, those who have scored 84 points in the semi-finals are promoted to the international evaluation stage, and the samples that are promoted at this stage are the domestic winning samples of CoE, but they cannot be called the annual winning manor, and they must participate in the international evaluation again.
International evaluation stage
The national judges invited by the ACE will arrive at the designated place of the competition country during the international judging week for seven days of evaluation activities, and a total of three stages of cup testing will be carried out, starting from the domestic competition, sometimes as high as more than 500. when they are selected to the first stage of the international competition, there are often less than 40 samples, and they must also go through three rounds of evaluation by the international judges and the score must be more than 85 points. In order to be listed in the winning manor of the year, and open bidding on the Internet. It can be seen that the competition is fierce and the competition is strict. The following is the international review stage:
1, the first round of the international judges: Round 1. In this stage, the referee leads the international judges to test all the samples promoted by the domestic competition in batches, and those who have reached 84 points will have the second round cup test.
2, the second round of international judges: Round 2, which will evaluate all the samples of the rematch again and arrange the order of scores. Those who have reached 84 points in the rematch will be the annual winning manor, and will be eligible for the online international bidding. If they are qualified to enter the winning manor, they can be listed in the list of winners of the country and CoE, and many coffee farmers will be famous in history. As a result of winning, they can extricate themselves from poverty and change their lives. This is the most wonderful moment. The top 10 in the semi-finals qualify for the finals.
The finals, also known as Round 3, will re-evaluate the top 10 in the semi-finals to determine who is the champion of the year and the order of the top 10.
