As the first raw bean event in the world, the emergence of BOP can also be regarded as a game against the Panamanian boutique coffee industry at that time, and successfully opened up a blue ocean for Panama to win by quality through this game. In 1995, seven coffee producing families in Panama jointly established the Panamanian Fine Coffee Association (Specialty Coffee Association of Panama, hereinafter referred to as SCAP); and in 1996, they launched the first Panamanian raw bean competition, the best Panama (Best of Panama, hereinafter referred to as BOP). The announcement of the results of the 2019 BOP held in Poquet, Panama, on May 22-25 also pushed the tournament to its highlight.
The new auction record of $803 per pound for BOP last year has been a great incentive for growers in Panama. What are the new changes in BOP this year? What is the latest result of the game?
The most progressive change-- renaming the group
The most interesting change in this competition. In the past few years, groups have been distinguished by tanning and washing, but this year they are divided into treatment group and washing group.
Encouraged by last year's BOP championship and high bidding prices, many Panamanian producers began to hope to improve the quality of coffee through different treatments, even bringing in treatment experts from other producing areas. Therefore, in the competition, there is no shortage of coffee with special treatments such as lactic acid fermentation, carbon dioxide impregnation, yeast treatment, and so on. It is very difficult to generalize this group with "sun exposure". From the point of view of keeping pace with the times, the competition decided to classify all non-traditional water-washed coffee as "treated" coffee.
To sum up, the whole BOP in 2019 is divided into five groups, namely Rosa treatment group, Rosa water washing group, traditional variety treatment group, traditional variety washing group and Pacamara group.
The most encouraging change-the increase in the number of entries
Today, when the price of international coffee continues to decline, Panamanian coffee has successfully inspired coffee growers by opening up a blue ocean of quality. Unlike the reduction in production across Panama last year due to climate reasons, the number of batches participating in this year's competition reached an all-time high, with a total of 174 batches submitted, an increase of 34% over last year, but only 78 batches were selected for international review.
The final steps to enter the international evaluation are 24 batches of Rosa treatment group, 24 batches of Rosa water washing group, 10 batches of traditional variety treatment group, 10 batches of traditional variety washing group and 10 batches of Pacamara group.
