Past studies have shown that coffee may harden the arteries, and caffeine lovers are advised to reduce their intake. But a study of more than 8000 people in the UK found that drinking an average of five cups of coffee a day was no more unhealthy than people who drank less than one cup a day.
The study, funded by the British Heart Foundation, was presented at the meeting of the British Cardiovascular Society in Manchester. The research team at Queen Mary College in London divided 8412 subjects into three groups. The first group included participants who drank less than one cup of coffee a day; the second group drank one to three cups of coffee a day; and the third group included coffee lovers who drank more than three cups, up to 25 cups, or an average of five cups a day.

The researchers found that even high daily consumption was less likely to cause arteriosclerosis than those who drank less than one cup a day. Compared with previous studies, coffee hardens the arteries, increases heart pressure and increases the risk of heart attack or stroke.
All subjects underwent heart scans and infrared pulse wave tests, and the results were still consistent after taking into account age, weight and smoking status. Professor Metin Avkiran, associate medical director of the British Heart Foundation, said the study "ruled out the potential negative effects of coffee on arteries".
Dr Kenneth Fung, of Queen Mary College in London, said: "although there are a large number of coffee drinkers in the world, different findings may lead to rejection of it."
Studies have shown that coffee is not as harmful to arteries as previous studies have shown. He stressed that although some participants drank a lot of coffee, the group with the highest intake drank an average of five cups of coffee a day as the benchmark. "I hope we can study these people further in order to calculate the (most appropriate) safe intake."
