What is the red cherry plan?

The Red Cherry Project (Operation Cherry Red Project) is a project aimed at improving the quality and value of raw beans of Ethiopian coffee. Since 2007, it has been initiated by Dutch trader Trabocca and farmers from producing areas. At the beginning of the harvest season, 100% ripe red coffee cherries are harvested by hand according to microclimate, which indicates that each coffee seed is ripe and rich in nutrients. In the next few years, the Red Cherry plan successively purchased facilities such as sun scaffolding, cherry peeling machine, coffee bean sorting machine, and cup testing laboratory for the producing area, so the coffee beans of the Red Cherry program are now a guarantee of high quality.

In Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee, coffee trees and soil are very good, but the income of farmers is not high. In the past, it was regulated by law, and all sales had to be handed over to ECX (Ethiopian Commodity Exchange). For various reasons, ECX is not beneficial to small farmers, and it is also a quantity over quality business model.

Dutch coffee trader Trabocca has loosened its restrictions on uniform sales laws. In 2007, the OCR (Operationa Cherry Red) Project Red Cherry Project was launched with farmers to improve their income and encourage the quality of coffee beans. Trabocca will select the coffee beans of small farmers by cup test, and then auction the beans at least US$7.5/lbs. Among them, Trabocca will only charge the US2.5 as the administrative fee, and farmers guarantee that they can get the reserve price of US5.

If the beans are of good quality and are auctioned above US$7.5, all of them will be in the hands of farmers. This open and highly transparent scheme has helped many small farmers raise their incomes over the past decade. Farmers also understand that as long as the beans with the best maturity are selected by hand, they will get a good price. With an increase in income, we can reinvest in hardware equipment such as sun sheds, slowly changing the economic ecology of brown farmers as a whole. Under the oligopoly of global consortia, small farmers have one more chance to survive.
