SL28 is the most famous and popular low variety in Africa. It was planted in Kenya in the 1930s and the disease spread to other parts of Africa. Is now spreading to Latin America. This variety is suitable for planting in middle and high altitude areas and has drought resistance, but it is easy to get disease. Among them, SL represents the selected variety developed by the former Scott Agricultural Laboratory (now called National Agricultural Laboratory NARL, located in Capitol).

From 1935 to 1939, the low varieties selected by Scott laboratory were all named at the beginning of SL. The laboratory studied 42 kinds of coffee from different regions of Li in terms of yield, variety, drought resistance and disease resistance.

SL28 was selected from a tree in the Tanganyika drought-resistant population in 1935. According to historical records, in 1931, a senior coffee officer from A.D.Trench visited Tanganyika (now Tanzania). He noticed that after the coffee trees in a region were drought-resistant, disease-resistant and insect-resistant, they collected seeds and sent them to the laboratory to confirm their drought resistance. The variety was then widely cultivated until it was replaced by its offspring SL28.
