Everyone knows that sleep is important and seems to be thinking about it all the time, and a positive and surprising study has found that drinking coffee before going to bed does not affect the quality of sleep!
Researchers at Florida Atlantic University and Harvard Medical School monitored 785 people for 5164 days and nights to see the effects of caffeine, alcohol and nicotine intake on sleep, the Independent reported.
Researchers, led by Dr. Christine Spadola of FAU, who published the study in the journal Sleep, compared individual intake of these substances with data from sleep diaries and watch sensors worn by participants, which recorded how long they slept, how efficiently they slept and how quickly they woke up.
They found that caffeine intake within four hours before bedtime was not significantly associated with sleep factors measured by wrist sensors.
In contrast, nicotine was most strongly associated with sleep interference-especially among insomniacs-resulting in an average reduction of 42.47 minutes of sleep time. Although not as intense as nicotine, the researchers also found that drinking alcohol before going to bed reduces sleep efficiency.
Although the findings appear counterintuitive, they are consistent with previous studies on the subject, the Independent pointed out. Dr Neil Stanley, a sleep expert, told the Independent: "the idea that drinking coffee before going to bed keeps you awake at night is nonsense."
However, Dr. Stanley also pointed out that different individuals have different sensitivity to caffeine, but for those with lower sensitivity, consuming caffeine before going to bed should not be a problem.
