Uganda is one of the major producers of Robusta in the world. Some Arabica also grow in different upland areas, especially on the slopes of Mount Elgon on the border with Kenya and the slopes of Mount Ruwenzori, commonly known as "Moon Mountain" on the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Some Arabica coffee also grows in the West Nile region in the northwest of the country.
Despite the expansion and improvement of the overall economy in recent years, coffee remains crucial, accounting for an average of only nearly 60 per cent of annual export earnings between 1996 and 2000. It is estimated that up to 20% of the population derives all or most of their cash income from coffee.
