On the sun treatment of Wahana in Sumatra

Arrive in November 2013. Back in the second year, Wahana Manor in Sumatra was the first naturally processed coffee we drank in this part of Indonesia, and it was really not a common way to make it. Most of what we see are wet-skinned coffee from Manning or Lintong. But one day, an importer we worked with called and said they had ordered a coffee, one of the best 10 they had tasted last year. We handed out a flyer and bought some conditionally. It has only recently emerged and is really an interesting cup, especially when you think of it as an abnormal area of production.

Wahana Natural comes from the Sidikalang area of North Sumatra, west of the volcanic lake Toba. Wahana Manor is a large but exquisite experimental property, where they separate different varieties, some of which are hybrids unique to Indonesia. Most of the products on the plantation are washed coffee and they have invested heavily in the area. However, this special coffee is dried and belongs entirely to the La Souna variety, a hybrid of Katimo coffee and Typica coffee, which originated in Sumatra. The new variety is being planted in the 90-hectare Takken area of Wahana. This species grows in the Wahana area between 1300 and 1500 meters above sea level, and all the trees are in the shade so that the trees can grow more slowly and naturally.

Industry name: Wahana Coffee Manor

Founded: 2005

Location: Sidi Karang region of North Sumatra

Altitude: 1300-1500 m (4250-5000 ft)

Variety: Rasuna

Grade: 1

Processing method: natural drying method

The plantation said it had observed the practices of the Organic and Rainforest Alliance, but that none of them had been certified so far. The certification process can take a long time, so at present this cannot be considered official, but a sign of the intention of the plantation. We mentioned that Wahana is experimental, so if interested, they also plant some "international seedling varieties", such as Villa Sarchi, Caturra and Catuai, all from Costa Rica and Typica from Colombia. These are in addition to native varieties and hybrids, such as this Lasuna.

Cup test features: peach, watermelon, citrus aromas. The texture of cream and cocoa beans has the unique physical qualities of Sumatra, but processing and variety selection add a lot of fun. You will smell some flowers, sweet dry smell and the smell of strawberries. This is a unique cup, and a tasting may be a new variety paired with an unusual process for this region.
