Caturra is a natural hybrid of bourbon, but it was further developed and widely cultivated by the Alcides Carvalho Coffee Center (Centro de Cafe) of the Agricultural Research Institute (IAC) in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. This variety has brought about profound changes and improvements to the coffee industry all over the world.

In 1937, IAC received seed samples of unknown genetic material from the border between Minas Gerais and Espiritu Santo. Studies have shown that the seeds are the result of a natural variation of the red bourbon tree found in Serra do Caparao, now a mountainous national park northeast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This mutation-the first naturally occurring coffee mutation found so far-forms the basis of all red Kaddura and yellow Kaddura varieties today.

Caturra has a higher yield than bourbon, mainly because its plants are shorter and the distance between branches is shorter, but it requires a lot of care and fertilization.

It usually matures faster and is more disease-resistant than the old traditional Arabica varieties.

In fact, the "Kadula" mutation is not unique; similar mutations give rise to Pacas in El Salvador (from bourbon) and Villa Sarchi in Costa Rica (from bourbon). Genetically speaking, in all cases, this mutation is very similar to bourbon.

Like bourbon, Kaddura is well adapted to most coffee-growing environments, but performs best in areas with an altitude of 1200 to 2000 meters and annual precipitation of between 2500 and 3500 millimeters. The higher the altitude, the better the quality, but the lower the yield.

The Portuguese word for Celtra refers to a kind of parrot. It can be translated as "Cotorra" or "Perico" in Spanish. Therefore, it is most likely that it refers to domestic calopsita or Cockatiel birds. In street language, it means a difficult person who likes to refute and argue. In Spanish, "Cotorra" can also refer to a very talkative and noisy person.

Common changes:

Kaddura Vermero (Red Kaddura)

It is reported that yellow cherries ripen faster than red cherries, and ripe berries fall faster than red cherries. Yellow is caused by recessive genes.
