Kotowa means "mountain", which comes from the native language of Ngobe Indians. In 1913, Alexander Duncan McIntyre came to Panama from Canada, where he fell in love with the land, its people and magical aromatic coffee. Four generations of the Alexander family have grown and processed high-quality coffee. Today, the estate is managed by Ricardo Koyer, Alexander's great-grandson. Kotowa property is located in the green mountain highlands of Panama, near Volcan Baru, overlooking the magnificent scenery of the Pacific Ocean.

The plantation does not use any herbicides, pesticides or chemical pesticides. In addition to environmental efforts, Kotowa has implemented a number of social programs for Kotowa's children and their families working on the estate, providing free medical care, day care and after-school programs. Since 2002, it has been recognized every year by the United Nations Children's Fund (corporate social responsibility).
