Front Street-Arabica Variety Introduction
Coffee beans three original species
There are three primary coffee bean species: Arabica, robusta and liberia. Among them, the Liberian species (Coffea Liberica) originating in Liberia in western Africa is also called large seed coffee because of its large fruit. Although this original species has strong vitality, its flavor is worse than Arabica. Its commercial value was not high in the early years. However, with the continuous development of coffee, Liberia varieties have a lot of news in recent years. The treatment method and planting method make this coffee one step closer to fine coffee.
But today, Qianjie mainly shares the knowledge of Arabica beans with you and understands why Arabica beans are the main beans used in fine coffee and their derivatives!
Arabica coffee is an important type of commercial coffee. In terms of composition alone, Arabica coffee has a low caffeine content, about 0.9% to 1.2%, and is quite rich in fat and sugar. Therefore, it smells soft, not irritating, tastes fresh and slightly sweet, and sometimes brings some refreshing sour taste, which is loved by most coffee lovers. It has a good aroma and acidity. Therefore, Arabica is mostly used for fresh coffee making.
Arabica: premium coffee beans with excellent flavor and aroma
Arabica is a representative variety originating in Ethiopia and is also produced in South Africa, Africa and Asian countries, accounting for 70% to 75% of the world's coffee production. Arabica is less resistant to pests and diseases, so highland areas are more suitable for cultivation, especially Arabica beans produced in highlands above 1500 meters are of the best quality.
Arabica's two oldest pure sources: iron pickup and bourbon.
Iron pickup/Typica
Ironbark is the original species of all arabica varieties. Iron pickups originate from southern Sudan, and the ripe fruits of iron pickups are red. This variety has relatively low yield and poor disease resistance, but its excellent cup test quality still makes it popular all over the world.
Coffee species: Rosewood, Jamaica Blue Mountain, Hawaii Kona, Elephant Bean, Sumatra Iron Pickup (Mantenin)
a. Geisha
A genetic mutant of iron pickup, native to the rosewood forests of southwestern Ethiopia. In the 1930s, rose seeds were shipped to Tanzania, and in the 1950s to Costa Rica. In the 1960s, he traveled to Panama, and after nearly half a century, he made a blockbuster, defeating the ever-winning army, such as Boben, Kadulla, Kaduai and Tibica, and won the first prize in the 2005, 2006 and 2007 Panama National Treasure Bean Cup Test Competition. In 2007, Rose won the International Famous Bean Cup competition sponsored by the American Fine Coffee Association (SCAA), and the bidding price was $130 per pound, setting a record for the highest price of competitive beans ever.
Guisha is cultivated in many parts of the world and is the new king of fine coffee. Panama, Guatemala, Colombia and other Latin American countries have higher quality and high price.
Rosedale has distinctive tropical fruity, floral, citrus and tea characteristics.
Blue Mountain/Bule Mountain
A species of iron pickup found in the Blue Mountains east of Jamaica. The highest peak of the Blue Mountains is 2256 meters above sea level. It is the highest peak in the Caribbean and a famous tourist attraction. It is located in the earthquake zone, has fertile volcanic soil, fresh air, no pollution, humid climate, foggy and rainy all year round,(average precipitation is 1980 mm, temperature is about 27 degrees) such climate has created the world-famous Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, but also created the world's second highest price coffee.
Blue Mountain coffee has all the characteristics of high-quality coffee, not only the taste is rich and mellow, but also because the sweet, sour and bitter flavors of coffee are perfectly matched, so there is no bitterness at all, only moderate and perfect sourness.
c. Kona/Hawaii
Kona is an ancient, pure Arabica tiepika coffee grown in the western and southern Kona region of Hawaii. Coffee trees are found all over the volcanic slopes of Hualalai and Mauna Loa, where elevations range from 150 meters to 750 meters. The soil fertility of volcanic ash is excellent. The sun in the morning matches the shade of clouds in the afternoon very well. There is no frost all year round, which is just suitable for coffee growth.
d. Elephant Bean/Maragogype
The best-known variety of tibeka beans, first discovered in 1870 in the Maragogype bean-growing region of the northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia, is at least three times larger than the average Arabica bean, hence its name. The flavor of elephant bean is bad at low altitude, but it is better at high altitude, with mild sour taste and sweet fragrance.
e. Sumatra iron pickup (mantinin)
Mantenin is produced in Sumatra, Indonesia, Asia. It is an ancient iron-pickup coffee with rich flavor, aroma and mellow, mild acidity and restraint, which is the biggest feature.
Knowledge development: soil, climate and altitude are the most fundamental elements that shape coffee taste.
