Front Street-introduction to Zambian Coffee
Coffee was brought into Zambia by missionaries from Tanzania and Kenya in the 1950s. But coffee production did not begin to grow until funding from the World Bank in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The increase in diseases and insect pests has led coffee farmers to plant a hybrid variety, Katim, but this variety is not as delicious as bourbon. But this was only a temporary change, and then the government recommended Bourbon again, but there are still a large number of Katim in Zambia.
The earliest Zambian coffee was grown in bourbon. Due to economic reasons, there was no effective way to dispel pests. Coupled with the backward technology, Zambian coffee was affected by moths and diseases in the early stage. Finally, it had to temporarily switch to the Katim variety, which is more resistant to disasters.
Although Katim is of great help to natural disasters and worms, growing this variety is a disaster for the country's growing environment. Eventually, Zambia abandoned Katim and changed the main varieties back to bourbon.
Over time, Zambia has applied the latest technologies and innovations in coffee cultivation, including chemical and biological pest control and coffee pulp composting. For example, planting is shaded in most countries, that is, banana trees or other agricultural products are planted in higher places or next to coffee trees to shade coffee trees.
In Zambia, their coffee cultivation is not shade planting, but the use of irrigation methods, fertilization and chemical methods to allow coffee trees to grow in sufficient sunlight to ensure the normal growth of coffee plants. the quality of Zambian coffee is on the rise.
It has been less than 50 years since Zambia built a coffee business platform, and it is a relative rising star in the coffee world, especially in the field of fine coffee. But also because of this, Zambia, led by large coffee plantations, has basically modernized the coffee industry, and they are also the absolute main force of the country's coffee exports. The most appropriate comment for Zambian coffee is "something to look forward to". Fresh fruity and acidity can be found in fine coffee samples.
Zambia has a population of about 14.6 million. Production in 2013 (60kg/ bags): 10000 bags. The boundaries of coffee producing areas in Zambia are unclear and are usually distinguished only by the south, the centre, the copper belt province and the north. Main producing areas:
Around Muchinga Mountain and near Lusaka City in the northern producing area
Altitude: 900m-2000 m
