Front Street-introduction to Duncan Manor in Panama
Panama's famous coffee estate Kotowa is located in the Pokuit producing area of Panama, where mountains are surrounded by beautiful volcanoes, most areas are still undeveloped, the climate is slightly colder and the scenery is very beautiful. Kotowa Katowa means "mountains" in the native language. The manor is located in the mountains, with an average elevation of 1700-1850 meters.
The founder of the manor: Alexander Duncan McIntyre, formerly a Canadian, has a very important political position in his hometown, but has a strong desire for a busy and vibrant life. One day in 1918, he read a report about Pocket in Panama in Central America. The report details that there is a secret that is cool all the year round next to the mysterious volcanic slope. So his curiosity drove him to Poquet.
Unexpectedly, he fell in love with the local people of Poquet and the dreamy valley here, so Alexander Duncan McIntyre decided to settle here. Up to now, the Alexander family, which has experienced four generations, has grown coffee in the traditional way and is proud of the boutique coffee they have planted with their heart.
Ricardo. Koyna (Ricardo Koyner)
The manor is currently owned by the third generation owner: Ricardo. Ricardo Koyner is in charge of the manor operation. Under its careful care, the manor has a strong social and environmental consciousness. in order to ensure a clean, safe and sustainable environment, Katowa Manor chooses to plant red coffee fruits during the harvest season. and use the local clear and cool mountain spring water for treatment. Under the concept of environmental protection, they use only half a liter of water per pound of coffee, which saves about 10 to 20 liters compared with other treatment plants.
However, the treated pulp and waste water are also reused as organic fertilizers. Finally, in a cold, dry climate of 1700 meters, it dries slowly and naturally. The manor uses traditional concepts but the latest technology to grow and handle coffee, so it specially retains 500 hectares of virgin forest as a wildlife reserve.
Katowa Manor, which has won many awards, won the traditional variety category of the tanning combination in the 2012 Best Panamanian Coffee Competition, and won a further five batches in 2014.
There are four main planting areas in the manor, namely Finca Kotowa DUNCAN, Finca Kotowa DON K, Finca Kotowa R í O CRISTAL and Finca Kotowa TRADICIONAL. One more planting area has been added in the past two years. Finca Kotowa LAS BRUJAS is also a very good area in the competition for the best Panama in the past two years.
Among them, Duncan Manor faces the distant Pacific Ocean, and the warm and humid wind blows to the steep ridges, bringing a variety of microclimates here. Go straight up to Duncan Manor, you can go straight to Baru Volcano. The elevation here is more than 1700 meters, and the wind is very strong. There are many huge coniferous forests in the park, all of which are more than two hundred years old. The planting history of the manor dates back to 1900, when Ricardo's grandfather began.
