Qianjie-introduction to Brazilian coffee
"Coffee cafezinho" is Brazil's favorite small cup of strong black coffee. In Brazil, buying you a cup of coffee is a habit and an important etiquette for hospitality, just like Chinese tea. Brazil is the world's largest coffee producer, known as the "coffee kingdom". It is said that the first person to discover coffee was an old shepherd in the Kafa region of Ethiopia. Because his sheep were particularly excited and active after eating a kind of red berries in the bushes, he was surprised that he also ate a few of them. I was so excited that coffee came out.
The variety Catuai has short and strong plants, green leaves and medium to small bean shape. Between the north and south latitudes of 5 degrees, generally planted above 1600 meters above sea level, moved to the north and south latitudes of 5-15 degrees, often planted above 1300 meters above sea level, latitude above 15 degrees, suitable for about 1000 meters above sea level.
This variety of coffee is not easy to resist leaf rust, nematode pests, berry disease, the yield is not high, in addition to the superior flavor, does not seem to have many advantages.
Kaduai, from the Institute of Agronomy in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil (IAC), is a cross between the New World species (Mundo Novo) and the Kaddura species (Caturra). Because the plants are small, they can be closely distributed together in batch cultivation, and the planting density is almost twice that of Bourbon coffee, which makes it much more productive than bourbon. In addition, although its resistance to diseases and insect pests is not strong, the advantage of plant shape makes it relatively easy to deal with diseases and insect pests manually.
Kaduai means "very good". Today, the Kaduai variety of coffee is considered to have good (not amazing) cup quality. It is divided into two kinds: yellow cherry berries and red cherry berries. it was first crossed between yellow Kaddura and New World in 1949 and was originally called Hmur2077.
The variety was officially released in Brazil in 1972 and has been selected through pedigree selection (single plant selection through successive generations) and widely planted there. Today, in Brazil, there are a variety of Catuai planting production pedigrees to choose from; some have high planting efficiency. Kaduai, which is transferred from Brazil to Central America, seems to be less productive; for example, studies have found that Kaduai introduced in Honduras and Costa Rica does not have a significant yield advantage over Kaddura.
Kaduai also has the difference between red fruit and yellow fruit, which is cleaner than yellow fruit. Kaduai, Kaddura, New World and bourbon are the four main varieties of coffee in Brazil.
