About Mucha Gala Coffee Bean Processing

Muchagara Factory, officially opened in 1959, is the oldest and oldest washing plant in Kirin Yajia. The name "Muchagala" is derived from Muchagala village of Kirin Yaja.

Muchagara is one of the Baragwi Farmers Co-operative Society + two washing farms, with nearly 1700 members, while Muchagara has more than 1000 members, each farmer owning 200-500 coffee trees. Fresh fruits are sent to a washing plant on the day of harvest, where they are stripped of their skin and flesh, fermented in a fermentation tank for 36 to 48 hours, then soaked in a clear water tank, and finally dried on a drying rack for 10 to 15 days.

The vast majority of Kenyan beans must go through the government's auction system. Distributors purchase raw beans from cooperatives or large farms through competitive bidding. The buyers who can participate in the bidding are multinational enterprises. They bid and sell them to raw bean importers or bean bakers. For a long time this was the only way to buy Kenyan coffee, so traceability was not possible, service was poor and prices fluctuated. Today the situation is slightly different, smaller importers can bid directly, the supply chain is therefore more efficient, and support for local businesses is greater, which is the first step towards direct procurement.

Kirin Yajia production area introduction

Kirinyaga has many small coffee farmers, but also some large coffee farmers, who own small or medium-sized farms. Coffee farmers without green bean processing equipment send coffee cherries to local cooperatives for processing. Most of the coffee here grows in the shade of silver birch and Muringa Alloevell.

Many farms are surrounded by several washing plants, so coffee farmers are free to choose which plant to send their cherries to. Because Kenya has a traditional auction system, better quality coffee can be sold at a higher price, better quality processing plants can sell better coffee beans, and attract more coffee farmers, these processing plants also pay coffee farmers more, sometimes after deducting marketing and preparation costs, the reward is still as high as 90% of the selling price.
