Malawi introduced coffee in the late 19th century, and folklore says that a Scottish missionary brought a small coffee tree in 1878 and planted it in Blantyre in southern Malawi.

The early Malawian coffee was very brilliant. At that time, Malawi was a British colony. The popularity of common cooperatives in 1946 led to a good development of coffee production. At the peak of production, the annual output of coffee beans in Malawi reached 7000 tons. But the good times did not last long. In 1971, due to political reasons, the common cooperative disintegrated, resulting in a sharp reduction in coffee production, from 7000 tons per year to 1500 tons per year. The total output was reduced by 78%.

At present, the Malawian government does not intervene in the export of coffee, so that foreign coffee buyers can directly establish relationships with sellers. Malawi's native coffee varieties are polarized, with some growing roses in the boutique coffee industry, while others are planted with disease-resistant but poor-quality Katim.

There are two kinds of coffee growers in Malawi, one is large-scale coffee farms popular in the south, and the other is self-employed coffee farmers mainly in the north.

There are five producing areas in Malawi: Chitipa, Longpi, North Viphya, Southeast Mzimba and Nkatabe Highland. Each producing area has planted Rosa and Katim, mainly these two kinds of coffee beans, as well as some varieties such as New World, Kaddura and so on.
