Vietnamese Coffee | Coffee planting in Vietnam Coffee production areas
The earliest coffee planted in Vietnam was brought to Vietnam by the French in 1867. The manor planting model used only began to form a commercial scale in 1910. Later, coffee cultivation was interrupted because of the Vietnam War. After the war, coffee began to be collectivized, resulting in a decline in output value and production. 20, 000 hectares of land produced only about 6000 tons of coffee.
However, the reform and opening up of the government policy in 1986 allowed private enterprises to produce commercial crops, which enabled a large number of Vietnamese companies to grow coffee beans on a large scale, and the national coffee production increased several times by 1990. In 1994, the rise in coffee prices made these companies even more frenzied, directly doubling the output of coffee beans, and Vietnam directly became the second largest coffee producer in the world. But such a large number of coffee beans into the market, supply exceeds demand, leading to the collapse of the global coffee market. Production plummeted, and then after the market slowly returned to normal, planting production also slowly returned to the previous level. In recent years, due to the development of coffee industry, the output of coffee beans in Vietnam has made a breakthrough.
The main producers of Vietnamese coffee beans are large estates, most of which are controlled by multinational companies. The coffee beans grown in Vietnam are mainly Robusta, and the coffee is picked artificially. Because Vietnam's boutique coffee is not developed, there is no detailed division of producing areas. The main areas are: central highlands, southern Vietnam, and northern Vietnam. The central highlands and southern Vietnam are mainly planted with Robusta, while Arabica coffee is grown in northern Vietnam, such as Bourbon, Katim and so on.
