Coffee can increase estrogen levels, Fan Zhihong, associate professor in the Department of Nutrition and Food Safety, School of Food, China Agricultural University, pointed out that studies have shown that coffee increases estrogen levels.

Many women regard coffee as a good helper for refreshing and increasing the mood of life. However, did you know that coffee not only raises estrogen levels in your body, but also causes nutrient loss due to diuretic effect?

Coffee raises estrogen levels

Fan Zhihong, an associate professor in the Department of Nutrition and Food Safety at the College of Food Science at China Agricultural University, said research has shown that coffee has a strong effect on increasing estrogen. Women who drink 4-5 cups of coffee a day consume more than 500 milligrams of caffeine. This raises estradiol levels by as much as 70% during the follicular phase of their menstrual cycle (days 1-5 after the start of menstruation), when high levels of estrogen are particularly dangerous. The study found that drinking just two cups of coffee from a small coffee cup significantly increased estrogen levels. The more you drink, the higher your estrogen levels.

Many women know that high estrogen levels increase the risk of breast and endometrial cancer, as well as endometriosis and breast pain. Therefore, women with these worries should drink less coffee. Women with a family history of breast and ovarian cancer should be extra careful and pay more attention to controlling estrogen levels in their bodies.

Coffee causes osteoporosis

Fan Zhihong also reminded that caffeine itself does not affect the body's absorption of nutrients, but it has a strong diuretic effect. Therefore, after drinking coffee, the urine volume of the drinker will increase significantly, so many important nutrients such as potassium, magnesium and vitamin B will be lost as urine flows out of the body.

At the same time, caffeine effectively promotes urinary calcium excretion, disrupts the calcium balance of the human body, and the body has to use bone calcium, which will bring about the consequences of osteoporosis over time. Experts stressed that for Chinese people who already have insufficient calcium intake, the impact of this aspect cannot be ignored.

Women who are prone to cramps and edema, as well as women with dark skin, dark circles and excessive oil secretion, should strictly control the amount of coffee they drink, because the loss of minerals and vitamins will aggravate these symptoms.

Coffee harms the health of fetuses and babies

Coffee can cross the placental barrier and can also enter milk. This means that it can be passed from mother to fetus through the umbilical cord and from mother to baby through breast milk.

Therefore, experts caution that pregnant women must not drink coffee, because coffee increases the rate of spontaneous abortion in the fourth to sixth months of pregnancy, while increasing the risk of low birth weight. Foetuses have little ability to detoxify, so coffee consumption by pregnant women has a greater impact on cardiovascular and neurobehavioral aspects of the fetus than on mothers.

Infants, however, are far less able to detoxify than adults and are therefore sensitive to caffeine, and high doses of caffeine may reduce brain weight, learning and memory, and have lifelong effects on IQ. Some mothers and children are particularly sensitive to caffeine, and the damage is greater. Therefore, nursing mothers are advised not to drink coffee.

Gradually reduce coffee consumption

In addition to coffee, tea, cola, chocolate, refreshing drinks also contain caffeine, can not ignore the total caffeine intake of these foods combined. Each small cup of instant coffee contains about 75 milligrams of caffeine, a refreshing drink can contain more than 80 milligrams, and a can of coke or a medium-sized chocolate bar contains about 40 milligrams of caffeine.

Experts also warn that coffee cultivation uses a lot of pesticides, and there may be more pesticide residues in its beans.

So experts suggest that if there are already signs of coffee addiction, suddenly stopping drinking coffee may bring withdrawal symptoms, such as severe headaches. It is recommended to gradually reduce the consumption to 1-2 cups per day. Women who can't quit coffee may want to drink decaf coffee. When drinking coffee, try to avoid added sugar and coffee partners, as they increase calorie intake. If you already drink coffee, you should refuse cola and refreshing drinks and avoid excessive caffeine intake.
