Chinese Coffee trees planted in Foshan
This is the first time I have heard that Foshan can also grow coffee, and the dream of growing coffee has come true in the 74-year-old Feng family. Lao Feng, who came from farming, began to grow coffee under the guidance of his son Feng Shilin, but now he no longer works in the fields, and planting coffee trees has become his playmate after he entered his old age. He grows his own coffee, grinds coffee beans and invites neighbors to drink home-grown coffee drinks.
Today, the reporter will take you to see the coffee trees in Lao Feng Foshan's home. Walk into the rare coffee garden in Lingnan and explore the small courtyard in front of the door with tens of thousands of coffee trees.
Origin: after drinking coffee, I want to plant coffee trees.
When it comes to growing coffee, Lao Feng and his son Feng Shilin both sigh that it is fun but not easy. Lao Feng said that because his son likes coffee, he tasted coffee for the first time in a cafe on Pulan Road in Zen City, accompanied by his son four years ago. Perhaps because of his farming background, Lao Feng wants to plant coffee trees in Guangdong.
The reporter learned in the interview that after graduating from Guangdong Institute of Water Conservancy and Electric Power in 1984, Feng Shilin worked in government departments for many years, and then went to sea to engage in the construction industry. In the meantime, he has been trying to find a career that he wants to do. He fell in love with coffee at first sight when he came into contact with coffee by chance. In the beginning, Feng Shilin learned most of the knowledge of coffee culture from books.
After that, after slow practice, Feng Shilin already knows the culture of selecting beans, brewing coffee and coffee like the back of his hand. The reporter found that Feng Shilin reveals the characteristics of a person with an engineering background: if you decide to do something, you must do it to the end.
Can Foshan really grow coffee from the tropics and subtropics? The reporter with questions walked into Feng Shilin's home near the Pearl Tower in Lingnan.
The flowerpots on their balconies are full of coffee: there are small coffee trees planted three years ago, coffee buds planted last year, and some coffee fruits that have been picked and dried. The corner of the balcony is also filled with sand and shovels for growing coffee.
Feng Shilin said, "the balcony in Foshan is too small. After my father and I planted coffee beans in Foshan, we took these coffee seedlings to the hillside in front of Yunfu's hometown. I didn't expect to grow coffee beans in Yunfu."
Process:
Many attempts finally succeeded.
A few days ago, the reporter also went to Feng Shilin's father's coffee garden on the hillside of Shan Tsai Tou Village, Minqiang Township, Yunan County, Yunfu City. The reporter saw that the tallest coffee tree was about 1.5 meters high, with clusters of small white flowers on the branches, emitting a faint fragrance. Lao Feng smiled and said, "I didn't expect that an old man like me could still grow coffee in Guangdong."
Lao Feng also said that he has a field where coffee trees have been planted for four years and have just been harvested once. "now when neighbors come, I invite everyone to drink our own coffee." Lao Feng said that nearly 10,000 coffee trees have been planted in Foshan and Yunfu hometown, including Miao.
"I'm sure my coffee garden is the only one in Guangdong Province." Feng Shilin said that he brought a lot of coffee seeds from foreign countries to Foshan. At first, he went to Shenzhen, Dongguan, Zhanjiang, East Guangdong and other places to try to grow them, but without success.
Lao Feng said that coffee is a very picky plant and is not easy to grow. Lao Feng said: "it is easy to sprout, but it is planted in many places in Guangdong. after the seedlings are exposed to the sun, no matter how much they are cared for, they cannot escape the fate of withering and dying in the end."
Institute of Agricultural Sciences:
Large area planting is not recommended for the time being.
Why can Lao Feng grow coffee in Foshan and Yunfu? Yesterday afternoon, the reporter interviewed Mr. Liang, a technician of Foshan Institute of Agricultural Sciences. Mr. Liang said frankly that, in fact, the current research on the cultivation of this tropical plant is still blank, in the trial stage. He said that at present, the Institute of Agricultural Sciences has also tried to plant dozens of coffee seedlings, which have grown to half a meter high, and the research on coffee trees is still in the process of exploration. He told reporters that he had tried to plant seeds in the institute before, but it did not sprout smoothly because of temperature control.
Coffee trees can grow in Foshan and Yunfu, he said, probably because they are located in the subtropics, and the varieties chosen are suitable for growing in these places.
As for whether the planting of coffee seedlings can be promoted, he told reporters that farmers will not be recommended for large-scale planting for the time being, because it is not clear whether it is really suitable for large-scale planting, and at least three or five years of trial planting will be needed.
Personality profile of coffee beans:
1. Variety: the two Arabica varieties, Tippika and Kadim, are basically the same except for the slightly different colors at the time of budding.
two。 Brewing coffee seeds: 48 hours
3. Burying coffee seeds: the temperature is controlled between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius and can sprout in 45 days.
4. Raising seedlings: it is more suitable in spring and summer
5. Daily management: keep the soil humid, but do not need to water every day
6. Height: the highest is about 1.5 meters.
7. Course: it takes at least 4 years from planting to fruiting.
8. Flowering process: it can blossom 6 times a year from the fourth year of planting.
9. Harvest season: after the fourth year of planting, the fruit will be harvested in the second half of each year.
10. Tips: do not spray pesticides, usually need to take care of the roots to prevent termites and insects.
11. Fruit: the fruit begins to be harvested in the second half of the fourth year. The pulp is very thin and the core is hard. After taking off the peel, the core is wrapped in a layer of mucus.
twelve。 Coffee beans: raw coffee beans are yellowish green, dried and roasted to become the scorched black that you usually see in the supermarket.
13. Palate: the taste is similar to Nanshan coffee, but compared with Nanshan coffee, it is mainly characterized by no bitterness, no sour taste and a good aftertaste.
