According to Hong Kong Ta Kung Pao, a staff member of a Starbucks coffee shop in Hong Kong went so far as to "wear the bottom of a cabinet" for two years, stealing an average of 20,000 yuan a month, defrauding the company a total of 480000 yuan. he pleaded guilty to theft in the district court yesterday and was sentenced to a year and a half in prison.

The 28-year-old defendant, Yang Weixiong, worked in a Starbucks coffee shop under Meixin Group for many years and owed a debt of more than 100,000 yuan due to excessive profligacy. From 2010 to May this year, when he was working at the branch of Lishan Building in Central, when no one was paying attention, he did not pay the bill, or reduced the amount on the bill, and then pocketed the money safely. The incident was not disclosed until an anonymous phone call was made to the coffee shop earlier and the defendant was found to have stolen money.

When questioned by the police, the defendant admitted that he had stolen about $720000 in two years, but as the Starbucks coffee shop could not count the exact amount of money lost, the prosecution calculated it on the basis of $20, 000 per month, that is, $480000 in two years.

The judge pointed out that from the defendant's modus operandi, it showed that the coffee shop had no verification or verification system to ensure that employees would not be seduced by money. the defendant worked in the shop for many years and knew clearly that there was no risk of stealing money. as a result, the defendant continued to steal public funds for two years, which was obviously a typical case of breach of faith. according to the guidelines of the Court of Appeal, the sentencing starting point was two to three years' imprisonment, considering the defendant's confession of guilt. The defendant was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment.
