A trip to explore the original taste of coffee in a French press.

Among the many coffee appliances, the French press is undoubtedly the first choice for simple and convenient extraction. It is also because of this that the French press has always been known as the best endorsement of lazy coffee.
Many coffee friends have said that the French press pot is the most appropriate instrument to reflect the original taste of coffee, because it uses the simplest method to extract the most original coffee flavor.

There are also many opinions about the invention of the French press pot. Today we will talk about one of its development history.

The French press, also known as the French press, originated in France in 1850 as a simple brewing appliance consisting of a heat-resistant glass bottle body (or transparent plastic) and a metal filter with a pressure rod. It was originally used for brewing black tea, so it was also called a tea maker.

Patents In March 1852, a Malikin craftsman and a merchant jointly obtained a patent entitled "Piston Filter Coffee Device". The patent describes a metal can attached to a movable rod with holes in the bottom and flannel layers on top and bottom. After manually pulling the movable rod, the movable rod moves in the cylindrical container. "Press the lever all the way down," the inventor wrote,"and the filtered coffee stays on top of the lever, refreshing."

It wasn't until the late 1920s, when a Milanese company patented a modified version of the French press, that the French press became known. The company gradually perfected the design of the French press pot within a few years of filing the patent. In 1935 they perfected the French press kettle-a spring attached to a plate-like structure at the bottom of the piston to keep the plate flush with the bottom of the container.

But the French press took a while to catch on in the United States. In the early 1980s, some Americans copied the British use of the French press and called it a cafetière. Others called it a "French piston coffee machine." Florence Fabricant introduced readers to this "French press" in The New York Times in 1993, describing it as a favorite of coffee connoisseurs.

Although some former coffee friends said that the French press pot can extract the most original flavor in the simplest way, but there are also coffee friends who say: can't stand the dregs of the French press pot, coffee extraction is not enough. In fact, Xiao Bian thinks that as long as you remember the following points, you don't have to worry! Otherwise, how could the law press pot be so trashy that it has been handed down to this day?

1. Coffee beans need to be ground to a medium coarse, otherwise the grounds will pass through the filter holes and give the coffee a cloudy taste. And too fine powder will lead to excessive extraction, taste bitter. Therefore, a good set of French pressure pot, filter is crucial.
2. The temperature of water is about 85-90℃, and the ratio of water to powder is about 15:1. Shallow roast coffee beans can be appropriately adjusted to high water temperature, deep roast can be appropriately reduced.
3. Press the process slowly, one press to the end, do not press repeatedly. Otherwise, coffee grounds are also easy to pass through the filter, affecting the taste.

4. Under the same conditions, generally speaking, the longer the extraction time, the richer the taste, but also easy to appear bitter, astringent, miscellaneous taste. For coffee beans of different roasting degree, extraction time can also be adjusted relatively. Deep roast coffee beans are best for a short time, which will get a great aroma and sweetness, light roast coffee beans for a long time, easier to extract the acid and aroma of coffee beans.
5. When purchasing a press pot, in addition to paying attention to the fineness of the filter screen, the quality of the pot body material is also very important. Pots with poor materials may crack during cleaning and use, which will also affect the appearance.

▪ Why does the coffee extracted from the press pot taste relatively strong?

The answer is simple, it uses the most direct coffee extraction principle, infusion + filtration method. The oil and aromatic substances extracted from coffee can smoothly pass through the filter screen without being blocked. This characteristic is especially prominent when paired with deep-roasted coffee beans. The smooth, sweet and rich taste of coffee is exquisite.

The press pot is an important link in the history of coffee development. A chain will be broken if it is a link. Hundreds of years of circulation have also witnessed the charm of the French pressure pot. Its biggest feature is that it is convenient to operate, multi-purpose and easy to carry. It is very convenient and practical whether traveling or in office. It is also very suitable for new coffee friends, the technical requirements are not high, but also can experience the real coffee flavor.
