Warming your hands with a cup of hot coffee can change your perception of the world around you, US scientists say, BBC reported.

Writing in the journal Nature, researchers say warm hands can lead to warmer and more generous views of the world, while cold hands tend to lead to a lack of trust in others and a reluctance to give.

To assess whether body warmth made any difference in judging a person's personality, the researchers asked volunteers to hold warm coffee cups or cold drinks in both hands and then rate the personality of others.

They found that those holding a warm coffee cup judged others more generously, while those holding a cold drink judged others more harshly.

In a second study, researchers found that people who held warm coffee cups were more likely to give a gift.

Describing whether someone treats others as warm as spring or as callous as autumn leaves often requires consideration of the person's childhood feelings and experiences, the team said.

Scientists say the link between touch and trust may be closely linked to parts of our brain called the insular. This part of the brain becomes active when we touch something hot or cold. But the same thing happens if someone breaks your trust.

Dr. balger, professor of psychology at yale university, is a co-author of this article. He said some people may have exploited the link between physical warmth and emotional warmth.

The researchers say their experiment could have marketing implications because it shows just how closely the body and mind are connected.
