Drinking too much caffeine in energy drinks can hurt your health.
Recently, a report from the United States shows that energy drinks are sending more and more people to emergency rooms, a situation that has attracted the attention of the US government and sent a warning message to the public.
13000 people in the United States have excessive caffeine caused by drinking energy drinks in a year.
According to data provided by the US Drug abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, in 2009, the number of people admitted to the emergency room for drinking energy drinks such as Monster, Red Bull and Rockstar was almost 10 times that of 2005, of which more than 13000 were hospitalized because of excessive caffeine in their bodies, and nearly half of them were hospitalized because alcohol in the drinks reacted with drugs due to the combination of energy drinks with drugs.
The head of the Drug abuse warning Network of the US Drug abuse and Mental Health Services Administration says more and more people are paying attention to the fact that energy drinks contain caffeine and alcohol and their adverse effects. Data show that a can of energy drink may contain as much caffeine as 14 cans of Coca-Cola, but people underestimate its harmfulness because these ingredients are not listed on the label. It is understood that high-dose caffeine can cause arrhythmia, high blood pressure, dehydration and other serious conditions.
Canada issues new rules
Limit the caffeine content of functional drinks
The caffeine content in functional drinks has begun to attract attention all over the world. Health Canada announced in October that it would implement a series of new regulations on energy drinks.
The new rules classify most energy drinks as food, which means that energy drinks must be marked with information such as composition and total caffeine content on the package. there are also warnings on the product packaging that "caffeinated drinks are not recommended for children, pregnant and lactating women" and "do not mix with alcoholic beverages". The new rules also limit the amount of caffeine in energy drinks to no more than 100 milligrams per 250 milliliters of energy drinks, and it is recommended that the caffeine content of energy drinks should not exceed 180 milligrams at a time.
Announcing the new rules, Canadian Health Minister Leona Aglukak said the government is taking a "balanced approach" to energy drinks, giving people as much information as possible, raising awareness of the risks of excessive caffeine consumption and enabling people to make informed choices about the products they consume, especially for teenagers and their parents who regularly drink energy drinks.

Specification for caffeine labeling of domestic functional drinks
So, what about the caffeine content and labeling of functional drinks in China? The reporter visited some supermarkets and checked the composition table of several mainstream functional drinks such as Red Bull and Health Care. The caffeine content of these drinks is marked on the packaging, and Red Bull vitamin functional drink (yellow can) has the highest caffeine content, containing caffeine 50mg per 250ml, but it is still lower than the caffeine content of energy drinks in Canada and other countries. These products are also marked on the packaging that are not suitable for people.
