A few days ago, the global coffee chain brand COSTA COFFEE announced the results of a new survey. The global survey invited at least 9,000 people to participate. Nearly half of the Shanghai respondents rated celebrity friends David Beckham and Tom Cruise as the most tasteful people in the world. Hollywood bachelor George Clooney came in second with 19 percent of the vote. Sexy mom Victoria Beckham came third with 11 percent of the vote. Supermodel Kate Moss and Bollywood star Hilpa Shetty, however, received surprisingly little more than 7 percent and 3 percent respectively.

This research focuses on assessing the enormous impact of taste on our lives and the decisions we make. For example, more than half (56 percent) of Chinese respondents said they would seriously consider a date's tastes in clothing, music, art and food before deciding whether to date him or her. Among them, taste in clothing has the greatest impact on dating.

In addition, the survey revealed a series of interesting contrasts, such as differences in taste and reality in childhood memories, and changes in understanding of books, art and music tastes, as compared to different countries and regions. For example, 73 percent of Shanghainese rated having good taste in fashion and art as more important than having good taste in music, compared with 37 percent of British researchers who rated having good taste in music as more important than Shanghai's 9 percent. The survey also found that 26 percent of Shanghai respondents thought fruit was the first taste they remembered as a child, down slightly from 38 percent in Beijing, while 39 percent of Britons thought milk was the first taste they remembered. In addition to the taste in memory, the survey is also very interesting to explore the most unique tastes. A quarter of respondents in Shanghai said coffee was the most unique taste they had ever tried, a result of coffee's recent popularity around the world, especially in China. Since 2006, the famous British brand COSTA COFFEE officially entered the Chinese market, in just 5 years, COSTA COFFEE has rapidly covered many cities and opened more than 70 stores. That's why nearly half (42%) of Chinese respondents associate coffee with the UK. Meanwhile, more than half (67 per cent) associate chocolate with love, while nearly a quarter (21 per cent) associate champagne, wine and romance.

"This research shows how important taste is to people-not just about food but also about understanding other people's tastes in clothing, social circles and art. By comparing Shanghai's perception of the tastes of other countries with their perception of Shanghai's tastes, we found very interesting results." Mr. Qiu Zibao, General Manager of COSTA COFFEE Shanghai, said,"At COSTA COFFEE we constantly seek customer feedback and derive the best way to provide products and services, down to every new beverage and delicious snack or how to provide a comfortable environment for guests to enjoy. This research is very useful to us as it allows us to reflect on the different needs of consumers in different countries and update the factors that influence those needs."
