Women who drink more than a cup of coffee a day can lower their risk of having a stroke by 25 per cent, research shows .

Women who drink more than one cup of coffee a day are 25% less likely to have a stroke, according to a study.

Those with little or no coffee intake, however, are more likely to suffer from the condition .

People who eat little or no coffee at all are more likely to develop the disease.

The findings are the latest to challenge a common belief that coffee is bad for people's health .

And this result once again challenges the popular belief that coffee is not good for health.

Scientists stress they have yet to prove it reduces stroke risk, but their work could have major public health implications .

Although the scientists in the study say hard evidence is needed to prove the effect of coffee, their findings may have greater implications for public health.

Researcher Dr Susanna Larsson, of the National Institute of Environmental Medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, said coffee was one of the most widely consumed drinks in the world .

Her team's study followed the diet and health of nearly 35000 women aged 49 to 83 over a decade .

The results showed that those who drank at least twice the coffee a day were 22% to 25% less likely to have a stroke.

The researchers say this may be because coffee resists inflammation and improves the effect of insulin.

It also contains anti-oxidants which is known to prevent disease .

At the same time, it also contains some antioxidant ingredients with preventive effect.
